Thanked: 133Shaving experience using a cartridge razor after using only straights
Been shaving with a straight only for the past 2+ years and enjoying the experience. Over the holidays I was visiting family out of state and circumstances led to me needing to shave. Cartridge razor I used was one with 3 blades (cheap ones that come in a pack of 12 or w/e). I only had a few days growth since I shaved before coming down.
The razor definitely pulled a decent amount but nothing ridiculous, I only did 1 pass with a little bit of touching up on spots I did not hit that great. The shave was definitly good enough for going out and free of cuts. Aftershave sting was definitely worse then what I get after a straight razor shave (I just use the Brut aftershave that they also had). Not as close as I would of liked but I was not going to risk doing more than one pass with the razor I had. My face felt like it was burning a bit for a decent time after the shave as well which was probably the most annoying part. For soap I used some Arko that they had laying around from one of my previous trips and would say I had good pre shave prep.
Overall not the worst thing in the world, and probably would have been a bit better if I was using a higher quality cartridge razor. After this experience though I think I might try picking up a DE for shaving on the road since I already travel on occasion for work. On a scale of 1-10 I would put it between a 4 and 5.
Happy holidays and have a good new year

I carry a DE when I can't or don't want to pack a straight

Thanked: 3224Yes, when travelling I pack a DE or SE, a brush and a shave stick. I like to avoid using carts as much as I can.

for some reason using a cart seems so primitive, almost barbaric.

Haven't touched one, since my teen years. But I've got some, and the razor for them. They'll probably be worth something, 50 years from now. Or used as a torture device. They'll probably have pocket lazers for all your hair removal needs, come someday, or find a way to alter your genes so you can't produce facial hair.
