I couldn't have put it better myself. You certainly can get a closer shave with a straight, but it takes it bit more skill. If you're happy to take the time to learn and practice loads, you'll get there in the end. My shaves are not only closer than with a DE, but I find a straight is more forgiving too*.
* I wouldn't have said that in the early days of learning.

I have to agree with Steelforge .
A straight is more of an art than a DE but the shaves just keep getting better& I find it helps to focus my mind in an odd Zen way.Paul

I only hope you do not buy pasta in bulk and get hot water from a public restroom.

I never used a DE and one of the primary reasons I got into straight shaving was the cost. It's cheaper than disposables in the long run. I found all the other benefits once I'd made the shift.

I have had a long simmering hatred of disposable blades. I tried a few disposables in my twenties and always looked like I had put my face through a meat grinder. All those that I talk to tell me that the blades on the disposables are the worst possible. Only used disposables for two days in all of the years that I have been shaving thankfully. Unfortuately I have been unable to get my wife from thsoe terrible disposables. Anyone ever had a wife to join you with the straight, either sharing one straight or using the differet striaght? I would imagine that this would get kind of hard for her to use a striaght since she shaves in places that often times she can't see. Sounds like thse places the straight would not be advisable.
