    Question Neck Hair Whorl/Cow-Lick

I've got a cow-lick in the right side of my neck hair that has always given me fits, no matter how I'm shaving. Is this pretty common for other folks here or am I just that lucky? Do you shave that area any differently or just deal with it?

Yes, I too have this issue on one side of my neck.

Since you are just starting out I wouldn't worry a lot about getting that spot perfectly. Just knock it down and maybe try to buff in that spot in a couple of diections. Mine is in the hollow of my neck so I also use the heel of the blade to get into it. If you have a DE or SE safety razor use it to finish cleaning up that spot after your laps with the straight. It's going to take a lot of experimenting to find out how best to shave that spot and get it right.

The way I handle it takes some practice but, Stretch the skin, Push in on the opposite side of your neck. This pushes that spot out, then shave the spot sideways towards adam apple. Then I do the same shaving at an angle up towards the nose. Just don't spend a lot of time on the spot as you will cause irritation that you don't want. So for now just do the best you can. After your technique is better than working on learning what it takes to get that spot right without having to do 5 or 8 passes over it.

A safety razor is a great thing to use to touch up when starting out with a straight. Unless you haven't used a safety razor???

Most people have a difficult spot. I’m with Jerry, don’t worry about it too much until you get more skilled in your technique. Over time you can perfect that area. Some ideas are to make your passes in a different order, there are those that can do a multi directional single pass and get a good shave. As an example, if I do an again the grain on my neck first, then a with the grain, it is very smooth and comfortable. If I go with the grain first and then against the grain, it’s not nearly as effective. You will need to figure out what works best for you. As you change your technique so,eti,es you will know right away this is not going to work and other times you might need to go with it for a bit before you decide. Getting a perfect shave for you is a skill, and all skills are developed through practice.

I have the same thing on both sides - a big one on my right side, and a small one on my left side. What Gasman described is pretty much exactly what I do. It took a long time to figure out. I can never really get BBS in those spots without irritation, so I don't worry about the BBS.

Yep...got the smashed wire brush thing on both sides, too.
The x pass I talked about in your other post, takes care of that.

Like Rez said...Practice, technique, and pressure. And above all...patience.

Only do what your comfortable with, advance when you feel ready enough.

Most, just do a single with the grain pass on the cheeks, and call it good till we got better, then on to the neck.

I say do what your comfortable with.

As everyone is saying. Wait and get comfortable with handling the razor. It will all come together with time. Your in good hands and in the best place to learn.

Ditto. Mine is under my chin on a scar I got in a cycling accident. It took me probably 10 years to learn how to get that spot without cutting the nonsense out of myself. It involves holding the razor toe end down shaving towards the chin at.an angle, also known as a scything stroke. Now I can get it smoother than the south end of a north crawling baby, but every once in a while I still cut myself pretty thoroughly though.
