Ah! :-)
I have considered side hinged boxes but I kind of stay away from hinges on small boxes because of hinge sizing. Most affordable hinges that have some semblence of durability (i.e. min. thickness 0.01in) are typically 1/4 wide. You can get smaller width hinges but a good one will cost you about $20/pair. The alternative I've considered are called 'barbed' or 'kerf' hinges which work well in such applications but these require a special cutter to apply (which I don't have but am tempted to get sometime). Thus I'm more likely to apply hinges to a multi-day box (7+) than a single day box to keep the boxes both durable and affordable.
That's not to say I will never make a smaller box with side hinges. I'll happily make anything anyone requests but I try to steer them toward value or durability when I can.
I hope this helps.

Yeah... I was thinking something shaped like the gothic coffins. I actually have a couple of the cardboard version of this style. They are a bit thicker than the actual coffin at the top and pull apart like a regular razor box.
I was thinking something along the lines of a wall display case. Kinda like a shadow box. I think ClassicShaving has one by Thiers-Issard:

Or like this but maybe a little simpler...

I think I would get a kick out of making a gothic coffin style box. It has such macabre associations :-) Perhaps I could make it out of Ebony and Bloodwood, or just knotty pine like something from the old West :-) Hehehehe. Really, that would be a kick.
As I said, I'll happily do a custom job for anyone and at reasonable prices. something like that, in hardwood, no hinges = $15.

Chris, how are you? Any idea of the specifics of when the 7 or 15 day (if you started a 15 day one) boxes will be available to see? Thanks!

Hi Philadelph :-) Thanks for saying 'hello'.
I'm pretty good. Up a bit late (2AM), and hoping I have a little energy in me for tomorrow as I have a busy day. I'd created this post to let everyone know I finally got my crazy web site up and running (I'd hoped to have it done a week and a half ago as one of the 'surprises').
The site is:
http://chrisgiraffe.com/
I'm listing updates on box production and future projects there under the 'upcoming projects' link.
As for the 7-Day box, I'm actually just about finished with a design. The plan is to finish them (7) this week before the 24th. Not that the 24th is significant in any manner, just a goal I set. The only thing I see altering the time schedule is varnish. Varnish always seems to have a mind of it's own in terms of drying times and it's never good to rush it.
As for the 14 day box, it's definitely on the drawing board but it will probably take a back seat to three different designs for the 7 day box. I experimented with some brushed aluminum lately and want to give it a try as a box cover.
Other than that I was working on a tool for woodworkers and trying to get it ready to submit for my first patent. I was a little rusty on my drafting skills and have been brushing up on them for a formal submission.
In the meanwhile, I'm sitting on 6 mahogany single boxes thinking, 'does nobody like the mahogany?'. Hehehehehe.
Either way, I was and am happy to finally get the site up and running so I don't have to drive everyone nuts yappering about my boxes here. I'm also happy to hear back from you and very happy SRP was able to recover from Sunday's crash. I was having withdrawl symptoms.

Thanked: 44Love the curly maple. I can't wait to see the 7 day set boxes and +1 for the wall hanger. Otherwise I will have to pull out my meager wood working skills and make my own. A drawer is just not right for these beauties.
Oh and I think I have a razor for you that is better than what you were thinking. I will let you know in a day or so.

Great Site. Have you thought about an email list notifying potential buyers of new products?
