Thanked: 1Why do 7 day sets exist?
Is there something wrong with using one razor every day? I'm curious to know the history behind the seven day set.

Thanked: 3I'd guess it's the same reason you can buy a car with a 1000HP. There's always someone who really, really enjoys thing X, and is willing to splurge. There's also people who just have lots of money and so they want the most expensive thing X just to show off.
I happen to respect the first reason a lot more, but whatever floats your boat.

Thanked: 13245One for each day of the week, so that at the beginning of the week the butler can strop them all up and the gentleman can shave with a fresh blade each day.....

There are lots of razors I would want, but I'd rather have 7 different razors than 7 of the same type. This probably also has to do with limited finances.
A 7 day set in good condition is beautiful though. People probably had them because they like one particular type of razor, and didn't want to have them honed every month.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I suspect that these were a luxury item, I
doubt that many common folk owned more
than 1 or 2 razors.

I'll wager it had a lot to do with having money that you could spare on a set of fine razors. A show of opulence.
First class passengers on the Titanic were the crowd that had seven day sets.

I wonder how often the average Joe shaved or got shaved.

I've heard that 7-day sets were kind of a luxury item. People would have their own razor/razors and keep them with their respective barber so that he could shave them. I have also heard that the common man did not know how to shave himself. There is also the matter of reusing a blade everyday. Supposedly this is bad for the edge as it needs at least a fresh day for the edge to "settle" before you strop and shave again. As for why people got a 7-day set of the same razor? I doubt most people had much interest in razors back then. Wouldn't they be considered more like how most people consider cartridge razors today? The only option to use to shave. Therefore, a rich man who could afford one for each day of the week would just get a batch of the same razors rather than try to get exotic and varying blades.

...Because an "8 day set" would be just plain silly!

Information and advertising. They weren't as quick or far reaching as we have today, You have to remember that people used horses and carrages. Cars were few and far between, and the car of that time could only go about 15 mph. it took days to get anything anywere. A sevan dayset might be ordered and not recieved for several months. These were also considered the best of there day, and may have to be made to order.
