asking around
I was just pondering if anyone on this sight has came up with an old straight razor just by asking around. I have asked around to see if i could free something something up that wasn't being used, to no luck.

Most people don't just give away razors that they pay money for to people who just sign up and ask for razors or other stuff (although it does happen). If someone introduces themself properly to the community and makes a strong effort to learn about the art but just does not have the means to purchase the necessary equiptment at the time then they would have a much higher chance of being the recipient of someone's generosity. One problem that we have had is new members signing up just for free stuff then leaving when they get it.

you may have luck befriending a barber, but the best bet is to just save up. Or if you have something nice you're not using offer up a trade.

Thanked: 22I kinda interpreted it as the fellow may have asked retired barbers etc but nobody wants to just give them away. That he was asking if any of us have simply asked around places for free straights and got one.
I could be mistaken though, and if he is just asking us for free stuff with not even so much as an introduction, that would be just plain rude IMO.

Thanked: 416If you are still around and posting reg in a few weeks and making friends then anything is possible. You have to get to know people and then you will find them to be the most helpful generous people you have ever met.

+1 for what's been said about the helpfulness and generosity of the members here.
FYI -- In my travels in this hobby of ours, I've had two friends voluntarily give me boxes of straight razors that belonged to their fathers or grandfathers. So talk up your new hobby amongst your older family and friends... you'd be surprised what might pop up.

I guess my first post was a liitle vague. I have my own razor and all the stuff to go along with it. But I guess what i asking is if someone has managed to get a razor that was a friends grandpas razor that maybee sits and collects dust in there dresser, or something along those lines. I am not trying to be a cheapskate. I was just wandering if someone asked about and found someone that had an expensive razor that they just gave up for lack of knowledge or interest in what they really had. Maybe my buddys dad has a 100 year old razor that he doesnt want because he never plans on using it? Maybe that razor would have a fun time shaving my face? I was thinking more along these lines.

I only started shaving with a str8 about a
month ago. I mentioned it to my father
and got the usual "Are you crazy?" comment
but I also got my great grandfathers
Wade & Butcher out of it.

i get where you are coming from, however if you just happen to have one str8 in your top drawer, and you are not using it and don't plan to, you are probably not a member here.
it is amazing what the members here give away, but only under and with the right circomstances. just look at the history in posts and you will see many items that have been donated to a newbie or for the right cause.
welcome btw.
