Thanked: 84Another short family story........
Hi all,
Just visited my Grampa (mothers dad). I told him I was using a cut throat razor (people here wouldn't know what a straight razor is - usually!) anyway, he said "Oh! you use an open razor" I was quite pleased he used a proper name for them.
He told me his dad always used an open razor and had a stop hanging high up in the bathroom. "Never ever cut himself" he said !! I don't believe him. He used a stick type soap as was common during the war period.
He said he didn't think his dad ever used a hone, and said the strop was sufficient to keep it sharp!
Did they use an abrasive paste in the early 1900's I wonder? or did he take it to someone for actual honing? Grampa may have simply never noticed his dad refreshing the edge on a stone.
When he was at war (he was in the Merchant Navy getting blown out of the water so we could have food) he could buy razors off the Quartermaster (if that's what they call them in the Navy) very cheaply. He offered them to his straight razor using family and friends but no one wanted them.
I wonder who the maker was?
Unfortunatly, "he's always been a DE man himself" still uses a brush though
Anyway, here's hoping he has a brain wave and remembers were the stuff is

Here's hopin' he finds the razor and strop for you. I have a US Quartermaster shaving mug, it's heavy a heavy china mug with no handle. Will try to post some pics in a few days.
