Paypal
What way do paypal fees work? I've always been baffled as to how and when paypal decide to charge.
Is there a % charge rate and a certain threshold for paypal charges?
Maybe they have it all listed somewhere but it never really was black and white to me.

https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/we...y-fees-outside should clear it up a bit... There is a link on that page to see the PayPal fees as they apply to European users as well.

Note that the factors that make the most difference are:
- Whether recipient has Personal vs Business Account
- Whether sender funds the payment by credit card or direct (including eCheck)
Worst case: If the buyer funds payment by credit card, and recipient has Personal account, BIG fees.
If the recipient has a Business account, he'll always be charged fees. But the fees are fairly small. (Roughly 2-3% usually.)Last edited by RetroGrouch; 06-05-2008 at 10:52 PM. Reason: Clarification

Thanked: 22If you have a verified personal account, you get charged a fee for all received amounts, and the credit card fee doesn't appear to be any less than not having a verified account.
Unverified account accepting a CC costs 5.9%, having a verified account and accepting CC costs 3% IIRC + their fee for receiving funds in the first place. Doesn't quite come to 5.9% but not far off.
Well this has been my experience and I guess YMMV. (I have heard the fees are much less for those living in the States)

I know my Business Verified accounts hits me for 3% + $0.35 fee for each transaction. International current exchange fees are supposed to be 1.5% according to Paypal but seem to be right around 1% at best. (then Uncle Sam can take 15% to 48% of what is left depending on your tax bracket every April 15th here!)
The stinger comes if you are selling via eBay too as their fees are getting higher all the time. At this point a $100 sale on eBay, paid for via Paypal will net you only $90 at best...........but, where else can you show and possibly sell an item to the entire world and pay only a 10% commission?
