Thanked: 029
Started with a Gilette sensor at like 15 or 16 with Barbasol Crap Foam, then moved on to a Mach 3 and Edge Shave Gel. Never really gave two whits about my shaves until about two years ago when a friend gave me a Gillette Knack (with a brush and good cream), which led to me getting a Merkur HD, then and HD open comb, then an HD Slant. Now I am just waiting for the perfect blade to get me into Straight Razor Shaving, especially on those weekend mornings I have the time to treat myself right .

I got a Norelco I think for my 13th birthday, I used that until I was a sophomore in college, mom didn't buy the new blades any more, and I decided $20-30/month for new blades was too much and bought a Gillette sensor and some barbasol... determined that it was in fact more fun (I actually kinda enjoyed it versus the monotony of the norelco) and a better shave. Then I went crazy and got a Fusion and used that thing for a while. Somewhere in there I got the bright idea to buy a van-der-hagen brush/soap kit at rite-aid, and liked that pretty well (no more cold shave cream!)
Oddly enough the history chanel is responsible for my forray into straight shaving... I was watching a show on "worlds sharpest blades" and the discussed straight razors... At the time I didn't give shaving much thought, but I like to keep my pocket knive(s) sharp and a strop looked like a good idea. So I went right onto Ebay and bought a Zeepk kit. When it got here I decided to give the whole straight shave a try.... found out that Zeepks are "for display only".
~$300 in SRP/ebay loot later I'm now a devout straight shaver!
Although I am leaving for France in 2 days.. may take a razor and strop/etc since I will be checking baggage, but i usually travel with a cartridge razor for airplane trips.. just less to hassle with.

It all started
I'm 47 now I started shaving at 17 with a Gillette Atra. Used it for years until it was lost by a major airline. The handles were no longer available and eBay didn't exist yet. So I have explored for a while nothing really seems to give a satisfactory shave. So I'm going Straight. Began my journey last night. I watched Lynn's video and several others on you tube and I'm looking at eBay stuff. My goal is to be straight in a month.

Thanked: 122, started when I was 14 with a Sensor handle with Sensor Excel cartridges. Had to shave ATG to get acceptable results due to black hair and rapid regrowth. Moved onto the Mach 3 Turbo and gained better results. Finally went to the Fusion which was almost just marginally better than the M3T - all ATG mind you. Finally switched over to a DE and now I'm primarily a straight razor user except when I really need a BBS shave - break out the Slant.

Howdy,
I'm going on 21 and I started with a gillete mach 3. I didn't even know what a DE was until I started looking through these forums. As for military, I am training to be a naval officer, but I did spend a week last summer at Camp Pendelton learning and practing some of the basics the Marines use. Shaving out of a canteen up in the mountains was definately a new experience.

Scott

I'm 22 now, and I started shaving about six or seven years ago (I can't believe high school was that long ago).
At first, I used a Mach 3 and some no-name electric razor. After about a year, I got tired of shaving because I'd either get a terrible shave or razor burn. I'd attribute that to three factors. I have sensitive skin, the razors weren't great, and no one taught me how to shave. When I quit shaving, I either sported a beard or else used electric hair clippers without a guard.
In my senior year of college, decided that I wanted to start shaving again, and there was no way I was going to use cartridge razors again. I finally found that other shave forum and then SRP (I don't use that other forum anymore). I got a straight and a DE, but I've honestly only used the DE about five times in as many months.

Thanked: 2I'm 21 now (just 2 weeks ago) and I guess I started with a single blade disposable Bic and then made the early switch to straights in the summer of 2006, thanks mainly to this site, and I haven't looked back since. I've been teaching my roommates at university every year to shave with one. I think I've chalked up 5 serious converts and have even supplied 3 of them with my own restored razors.

I turned 30 this year.
I started with the Wilkinson protector system with Nivea foam-"lather" from a can, and have always used this until I switched to the straight, now one year ago. There's no going back
Hopefully I'll be in law-enforcement next year, requiring daily shaves.

17. When I started shaving 3 blade razors were everywhere, and it wasn't long before 4 blade razors (and now 5 blade razors!) began to flood the market. I started using and continue to use Gillette Mach 3, but within the next week or so I should finally get my straight razor. Around here, refills for the M3 are $13.00 for 5 cartridges, which IMO is ridiculous.

Thanked: 028, started with an electric shaver at the age of 15, then walked the Sensor/Mach3 route for about 10 years ... now I mainly use the straight, unless I have to shave fast
