I think the appeal of stubble for some women comes from our biological drive to find the best sperm for our eggs. On a very basic level, we're looking for the strongest, toughest, manliest mate, and nothing says "rugged" like a week's beard.

For the rest of us, either our instincts have changed on their own or we've thought about it and decided that a man's ability to groom himself is attractive.

It's evolution talking. Testosterone makes the beard grow (I think), and muscles and sperm--good things for having and raising off-spring, or at least they were for the first 99.9% of our evolution.

It's the same reason men like breasts and hips. Men who like breasts and hips, mate with breasty, hippy women who have have children like their dad who like women who are breasty and hippy and mate with them and have children who ....
