New to SRP!
Hello everyone,
My name is Dean and I have recently joined this outstanding forum! I am a 43 year old police officer living in a large metropolitan city in sunny, palm tree swaying Florida. I am new to this forum but have been a straight razor shaver my entire life! I hone and maintain all of the razors in my arsenal! I was taught this skill/art as a young boy by my grandfather who shaved with a straight as well as a DE. I personally use a straight razor that was not only his razor but his father's! (my great grandfather's). I only recently found out about this forum. Up until now I was going on the assumption that I was the lone ranger when it came to the art of the straight razor. I am pleasantly surprised to find so many knowledgable and helpful straight razor users on this site. I look forward to getting involved in your conversations and learning from you all. Perhaps I too can impart some of my experiences and knowledge on to those who are just starting out. Thanks to all of you again.

Welcome, Dean
Yours is a rarer perspective these days and I look forward to hearing more about what it has been like for you as a lifelong straight user.

Thanked: 267Welcome! You will be a great source for sure. I have a question right off the bat. Did the guys "in the day" shave one pass or multiple passes? I saw this question somewhere and it was not answered very well. Do you do more than one pass. ATG?
Take Care,

Yes, I personally make multiple passes to include against the grain. However, just like all of you, I am pressed for time or just too busy. In these instances, I will just elect to shave with the grain. This exact instance ocurred this morning before church. Too many showers...not enough hot water! I have a wife, two daughters and two sons still living at home. My grandfather also made multiple passes. I vividly recall the sound his whiskers made as they were being cut against the grain while I watched him shave at the sink. Indeed, I was instructed to shave first with the grain and then against the grain. However, experience has taught me that against the grain can be more of a diagonal stroke versus a strict against the grain stroke. An example of this diagonal stroke is my jaw-line and above my upper lip. Everyone's whiskers grow differently and the coarseness of the follicle should be considered. I have a thick, dark, coarse beard. It is important to utilize what works best for you as an individual.

Welcome to SRP Dean. It would be great to read more of your experiance w/ str8s prior to joining SRP. I can see a lot of different hone patterns on the blades I have from previous owners. Most of the hone patterns, I'm sure, are from people like you that used a straight every day and were taught by old school people that just used it because that was all there was. It would be intreesting to read about how you and others modified your edges and the reasons for the mods. I can only guess as to the reasons for the original hone patterns on my blades.
p.s. I shave in the late evening so I can relax and take my time shaving. My beard doesn't grow too fast so my shave is good for the next day until late afternoon/early evening.
