Happy Thanksgiving
I'm a noob here and just wanted to wish all the American shavers a Happy Thanksgiving!
I haven't had a full shave using a straight yet. I did try a WTG pass on the cheeks yesterday...not great.. .a little tugging, but not horrible either. I'm going to try stropping the razor again and give it another go. If that doesn't feel great, the I will start fresh. I don't know if the Boker just isn't sharp enough or if it's just my lousy technique...or both!
I'm buying a Dovo Inox 5/8" this afternoon and will send it off to a honemeister here and get a fresh start. Maybe after Christmas, I'll send the Boker in to be re-honed...or would I be better off sending both in and save on shipping that way?

i just listened to Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie on the radio and remember it is Thanksgiving in the US.
Happy Thanksgiving down there! if you haven't listened to the song it is a must. absolutely hilarious but not goofy. classic is a better word i think.
as far as your razors go i would send the one out first so you have something to compare to as far as sharpness goes. you might save on shipping but i know for me if i could eliminate a variable (ie whether the thing is sharp or not) then i can concentrate on my technique more. it gives you more knowledge so when your razors do start to dull a bit you will know it. that is just me though. sending them both out isn't a bad idea either.
from one noob to another, be very careful and take your time when stropping. it is a very important part and i know my technique wasn't so good when i first started and my razors edge suffered for it. now i still take my time and pay attention.
have you decided who to send the razors to for honing yet? i only ask asi noticed you are in Ontario like me.

Hi chee16,
Thanks for your reply. I haven't decided on who to send them to. On one hand, I was thinking of going with a very well known honemeister with an established reputation in the US. However, if I could find someone locally or even in Canada with some good references, that would be my preferred route. The cost of doing business or buying across the border now is prohibitive.
I am a huge fan of supporting local businesses, so if I could find someone in Ontario who does great work or even just in Canada that would be great.
Please, my American friends, do not take any offense. But right now, it's almost a 30% hit when paying for anything in US funds.
I understand there is a member in Quebec, username "floppyshoes", that provides the service. Has anyone had any experience using his service. Would love to hear some feedback. And again, I mean no offense to the member, but would like to check references before sending out my razors.

i was going to suggest floppyshoes as every post i have read about his work are full of praise. good prices too. if you search on floppyshoes in the workshop part of the forum i'm sure you'll find lots of pics of his stuff.
so it does really suck right now buying anything from the US eh. i wanted to buy a caster board (i know i need to grow up but i will never do it) and the conversion is insane. i also run a health food store and some products have gone up in price up to 30% from when i first bough them 5 months ago. crazy stuff.
