Thanked: 131Let me see....
Two mammoth ivory blades at £140 each= £280
Selling one of them on eBay for the price you paid for both, effectively getting yourself a FREE mammoth ivory blade.... priceless.
If it was overpriced would you point it out? I would. Would pointing it out do a blind bit of difference? No.
They may also be priced low if the shop is located in a place that doesnt have the market for them. Essentially you are there to be their market.
It is therefore your duty to take them off their hands. Take your responsibilities seriously man! Before someone else does it for you!

Personally, I feel the £140 is a lot of money for a blade and sounds just about right to me. Buy 'em.

The price actually sounds ok. Mammoth ivory isn't that expensive. You can get slabs of it on ebay all day long.

Thanked: 1587Yes, I agree with X. 140 GBP is a lot of money. My Dovo B-L from Trumpers was 155GBP and I felt that was overpriced.
I would be wondering about the 300GBP quoted on the web sites to be honest. I mean, Dovos are OK and all, but $600 - $750?
But maybe that is just me. And maybe mammoth scales are expensive. But I seem to recall John Crowley selling PapaBull mammoth ivory 8/8 Friodurs with worked spines for 300 - 350 USD a little while back. I think he has a spanish point 7/8 with mammoth ivory at the moment for 350?? What's that? 230 GBP?
OK, so I guess 140GBP is on the cheap side. If the assistant has not screwed up, I'd go for it. But, knowing how fate works, by the time you go back to buy one the owner will be there and tell you that his shop assistant is dyslexic... the price is 410GBP!!

Buy them both, sell one.
I've seen them in London (TOB store) for 600GBP apiece.
Now... I didn't shave with it, but for the blade only it would not be worth it imo. The mammoth ivory scales are very nice though, even if they are much heavier than the blade itself.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

OK, guys, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to see if I can revisit the shop next week and will ask the price again. I think James is closest to what I'm expecting -- that the assistant got it wrong. The prices were not marked on the blades and he didn't refer to a pricelist, he just quoted me the price and confirmed verbally. So we'll see. If I bag it at the price, I might ask for this thread to be moved to the Bragging Time forum .
Cheers

Personally, I'd try to haggle with the guy. ya know... cut 'em down on the price a bit. But that's just me. Unless I'm buying from a major retailer where I know haggling will get you nowhere, I haggle. If they take the price, then they have determined that it's worth it for them to cut the price and move product now versus leaving it on the shelf. A bird in the hand if you will.
If I go to a yard sale and something is marked for 20 bucks, I offer four.
What have you got to lose?
