I found that with straight razor shaving you get back what you put into it.
If you take the time you get a great shave.. If you hurry you cut yourself... if you hone your own razor you will have to learn to shave with a smile on your face .. the process is more important to me than the result.. (which is gettting better every shave by the way)
If you get a great shave from M3's and think thats the best a men can get... wel what the heck.. go for it..
I'll just go hone my ancient razor and enjoy the sound of the stubles screaming while they jump into the lather.

Thanked: 335Why use just a Mach 3 when you could use a light speed straight?

Thanked: 1212Are straights rubbish? Let me think for a while...
In one of the Die Hard movies (the third, I believe), John McClane (Bruce Wilis) is forced to walk through Harlem with a sandwich board that reads "I hate nī**ers".
It puzzles me why some people would want to do the cyber-equivalent of that.
What do you expect us to say? "Yeah, we're all a bunch of idiots that love a good self-fulfilling prophecy in the morning."?
Straight razor shaving is not for everyone. It doesn't make you less a man, if it's not for you. Dismissing something you don't get, does.

I agree the tone of the original post sounds like a troll to me too.
However in the chance its not I would just say straight shaving ain't for everybody and really isn't for most so your just not one of the chosen few.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

After my laser treatments to remove my beard I really don't need to shave but I still do,
Does shaving at 3 times the speed of sound help the hair to stand taller?

what i like about straight shaving is that you can take a 100 plus year old razor and shave and get the best shave you ever had, then you get to play with all kinds of cool tools, to rebuild and not to leave out ,making your on soap, razor brush, and strops, so lets see a bick that is 100 plus year old shave not only you but your kidsas well.

I think str8 razor shaving is badass.Once I got it down I really enjoy it.I consider it a way to relax, take my time. There is a lot of things to learn about this art, trying it a couple of times and saying it is rubbish sounds like life living in the fast lane, not trying to offend anybody, but to each their own.To me the shave is only a part of it.I like vintage str8s,some razors are very interesting to look at,I keep mine in display cases, pick the one I feel like using for that shave, clean her up and put her back. One shave for me could be up to a half hour, not including warming up my soap mug.It is definitely not for the man on the go.I take care of my razors like I care for my guns.Working on them is an excellent way to pass my time, when I have nothing to do.I sold razors to expand my collection but it got hard to let them go after i finished one.I still have a small collection of DEs,about forty or more.I sold some of my prized DEs and kick myself in the ass for that.I think it should be given a chance,if it isnt for you,oh well.Str8 razors, fast cars, pretty women and cold ass beer FOREVER!!!!!

Thanked: 9Skill takes patience to learn. Straights edges are superior if you have the skill to hone them. Learning a lost basic man's skill again is alien to the disposable fast lifestyle of the "unskilled" man. Whether it is of interest or not is a man's own decision.
3 times is closer is a fallacy, the second or third blade will not cut closer than the third. Making the same pass at same angle accomplishes squat.
(first cut is the deepest), changing angle of the stroke will get the stragglers. The pivoting head of a mach 3 keeps the edges at good angle. A skilled hand with a straight does the same. The straight is superior imE cut wise and lasts longer.Last edited by thewap; 01-07-2009 at 06:44 PM.

I've only been shaving with a straight for a few months, I still get that "I think I lost a little skin" feeling after my shaves which some lotion helps with (I just haven't gotten around to making or buying aftershave, I'm indecisive on which one).
I don't know if I get a closer shave. I can't shave against the grain with any implement, my skin is way too touchy. I don't notice a difference in the feel, but I do notice the stubble is slower coming back with the straight. is this because it cut it closer or because the hairs are afraid? I don't know.
for me it wasn't about a closer shave at all. it was 1. a connection to a different pace and way of life 2. the time it takes helps me reset in the morning, clear my mind and leave home and home and go to work and keep that there (I guess if I start bringing work home I can start shaving at night?).
I also love knives, gives me another excuse to hoard them. I love playing with things, fulfills that need to. it takes skill, whereas anybody that can color as well as a 4 year old can shave with a disposable/mach 3 type (I still keep them on hand for shaving over tattoos etc where I don't trust myself with a straight).
I think it is not the same experience at all, even if results are similar. as to how well, I have a big wedge I got for Christmas, damn it shaves super awesome. I don't think I could do any better with a 3 or 5 blade thingy. usually though I'd say I break about even.
