I try to buy from places that advertise themselves somehow, either by a sign or big letters on their storefront. But then again I usually don't buy a lot of stolen goods or drugs.

I LOVE IT! They've got the whole "old world Italian" vibe/look-and-feel thing going on, and it totally works. Really like the message at the end, too. Now I'll have to go drop a chunk of change over there to let them know I like it...and to make up for those of you who don't!
OK, JB, I can respect your feelings, but that very last clause is just flat-out wrong. No matter how well a business is doing, it can ALWAYS do better!
Is the shop doing so good that it's staff is completely overwhelmed? Great--then hire more qualified people! Shouldn't be too hard to find them in this economy.
I make part of my living as a marketing consultant, so I know. I think you may be making the classic mistake (pardon the pun) of confusing "advertise" with sleazy used-car salesman-like tactics on late-night TV.
Advertising/marketing does not have to be tacky, tasteless, or sleazy. I'll bet you go to see movies that utilize "product placement" and you don't even realize it...and you enjoy the movie!
Sure, it's easy to bash on advertising because we all hate junk mail, commercials on TV (except the really good ones, like the cavemen or sometimes the Geico lizard)...but think back...how did you every even find out about Classic Shaving, or some of your favorite stores?
Don't tell me it was ALL through word of mouth (which is also advertising), because I won't believe it. You saw an ad somewhere. The ad did it's job--it hooked you up with someplace that had stuff you wanted.
OH--and here is my own personal "commercial" that I had a professional videographer film, with me as the star:

I am completely envious of the production values. Must've cost 'em some $$. But my wife...bless her...noticed right off that the lather wasn't right and that the video is "selling an intimate moment, not any products. I like your videos better." I love my wife.
