+1 on locking the door. And leave your cellphone, pager, etc out of the bathroom, too.

I think lock the door depending on who you're living with. If you have kids, pets, or any female roomate (be it wife, girlfriend, or friend) lock the door. However, I live with two guys, so I leave the door open. That way they don't bang on it wondering what I'm doing and startle me, and there is enough room from the door to my shaving mirror for them to see me and keep out. Besides, they don't want me to come after them with my razor.

After a close call when my wife let out a squak when she stuck a mascara brush in her eye, I shave alone. She knows not to interrupt my shave time.

My wife said jokingly that she would do the same thing and smack me on the butt while shaving. I quickly reminded her that it is not a joking matter.
As far as kids my 2 year old is always still asleep while shaving just so I can avoid that distraction, that way I don't have to worry about that because there is no way to lock my bathroom door unfortunately so no quiet privacy otherwise.

I never lock the door and I allow my 3 year old daughter to watch me when I am shaving.
My kids have to learn (the oldest already understand) that the use of a sharp blade automatically means that there is no play. I haven't had a single problem yet with all the time she has spent with me.
And my wife understands that if someone handling blades / power tools, you don't distract them. I would be VERY mad if she did something like that. But she know not to do that, and I trust her.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Learned the lesson just this morning. It's gonna be locked from here on out.

All it took was me showing SWMBO just how sharp my razor was. I believe it was the time I scarred both my ears and I told her that I barely touched the blade to my skin and said something like "now imagine if I'd actually put pressure on it".

I'm with Gugi on the possibilities
I let my 2yo watch, I think it is good she learn how real men should shave.
