Thanked: 0That's all I have done and when somebody uses the electric clippers, it doesn't get close enough for my liking. That "barber" says that they get as close as shavettes/straight razors and I called BS. If the guy doesn't want to use the razors, then why not just say that he doesn't want to hassle with them instead of making lame excuses like the electric clippers work just as well and the open razors are illegal?

Thanked: 1Who do you go to in Cincinnati? I have had the same barber for some time, and he has many straights on display; never asked him to use any on me yet though. Next time i'll ask him if he uses them.

Sorry, for the delay, you're about to find out why.
Went for my weekly cut today. Yes I get my haircut weekly, mown pretty low so I need a trim every week.
Bill, my usual Barber is gone. Gary, owner of the shop says extended leave, most likely though he'll retire while out and not come back. Health reasons, sudden and unexpetced.
Anyway here's what I found out. It's a 4 chair shop and the other 3 definitely use a disposable shavette type blade. Gary, the owner, said he was 99% sure Bill was using a straight, as he never ordered blades as the other 3 did from their supply person, and was also seen stropping and honing.
They are not aware of a law preventing the use of straights in Ohio. Gary's answer was that none of them (meaning he or the other 3) "had the balls" to use them. He also commented that another previous barber whose name was Gerry also used a straight when he was there years ago, and was not very good at maintaining the blade and was constantly nicking and cutting customer's faces, necks, heads etc. (Which also had the other 3 even more against using one)
I go to the shop every week, if I hear anything else or see Bill I'll let everyone know.

Hi! Please see the tread and scroll down to Ohio Barber Sanitation rules! I wish more Ohio barbers used straights!

Thanked: 271The Ohio rules are probably similar to those here in Italy, which require sterilization in an autoclave at 120 °C for 20 minutes. The reality is a combination of cost and declining market. In addition to an autoclave, you also need steel-scaled razors so the reason why barbers gave up using straights was a combination of high cost and declining market. Today, you can find a legal autoclave for about $1,000 and good steel-scaled razors for $75.00 to $150.00 and if would be economical to offer a traditional, full-experience shave for $30.00. The problem is that the old barber's are giving shaves for a fraction of that, their traditional customers would never pay more and they are too old to make a big investment and create a new market.

Tread carefully with barber shaves. Very few who have had them got anything approaching decent results. It's not like 40+ years ago when barbers were trained for this and were experts. You can probably do a better job yourself. Most barbers these days use their customers as their training source.

Thanked: 146BLUE STAR BARBERSHOP
This is a place in Columbus that advertises straight shaves. They seem to have a lot of girls on staff, and I like girls..., but I would like to hear of anyone's experience. Seems like a lot of hype and no prices anywhere, which = expensive.Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca
