Thanked: 0sharpening with diamond systems
considering a lansky or a DMT diamond system since i can put a constant edge bevel on the blades including kitchen knives. has anyone used something like this or just regular bench hones? thanks for the help.

Hi,
The DMT bench hones are ok. They cut very fast & you have no worries over lapping them. They do leave a very aggressive scratch pattern though. The DMT Extra Fine, at 1200 grit, is a good bevel setter though. The Extra Extra Fine will reduce it's scratch pattern quickly, but leaves it's own. This means that ideally you need another stone to smooth this, such as a coticule & then maybe a polisher.
DMT's can also cause chipping to the delicate edge, & sometimes even great care cannot prevent this.
On a razor the angle of the bevel is determined the the relationship of the spine to the edge. Deviating from this will not give a good shave, if you can shave at all. Just laying a razor flat on the hone sets the perfect angle.
Are you referring to the Lansky sharpening system, with the jig to set bevels? If so, no good for a razor i'm afraid.
Both your choices are great for knives, but though the DMT is passable for razors, the Lansky is of no use.Last edited by ben.mid; 02-09-2009 at 07:29 AM.

I have the lansky system and its great for knives but forget about it for razors. The finest it comes with is way too coarse for a razor and the jig is terrible for razors. I once tried it on a test razor just for the hell of it and the results weren't pretty.
