No matter which brush, I think cleanliness would be an issue, even with a synthetic.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 1I spent some time in the bolivian amazon. I used a double edge safety razor, which I bought there and blades that I bought there along with some shaving soap. It worked pretty well. The gillette type disposable razors they sold were consistantly horrible all over bolivia.
I'd recommend a double edge razor over a straight razor. If you bring the straight razor make sure to have plenty of oil, as things can rust pretty rapidly (even if it is stainless). Most of the things I brought with me I considered disposable, things just don't last that long. People tend to steal things as well sometimes (particularly little kids), so keep that in mind.
You'll also have to check these things with your luggage and if your travel locally there is no guarrantee that local security wont take your razors. I have a friend that had his swiss army knife swiped (stolen) by security while flying within bolivia.
Make sure you bring some good flashlights, with extra batteries.

Toss my hat in with the DE people. You could even do a Shavette since they're a little easier to store. It just seems more practical to me than hauling around all the appropriate gear for a straight (plus DE's/Shavettes are cheap and less likely to attract sticky fingers). Blades are individually wrapped too, so that ought to stave off any humidity problems.
