Default V's Barbershop - Peoria, AZ

So after looking for a while online to find a good place to get a straight razor shave professionally, my brother, father and I went to V's barbershop and all got a shave. While none of us had ever had a straight shave before my brother and I decided that it was the most comfortable and least-irritating shave we'd ever had. I have a feeling I'll be getting a call from by brother soon asking about razors and brushes. My father has only ever shaved with electrics because of an ingrown hair problem and didn't enjoy it as much as we did but I think this was due to his skin not being used to the torture of Mach 3s like my brother and I.

I didn't ask what products they used but we all enjoyed them and especially enjoyed the hot towels and lather. After the shave they used a hand-held massager on the shoulders and neck. I didn't have my glasses on during the shave so I couldn't tell what the razor looked like really but I'm pretty sure it was a real razor. The one they were using on my brother looked like it was a shavette style, either that or it was a really short frameback. There were a couple of places where my barber (we all got shaved by different barbers) could have gotten a little closer but I didn't notice until after I was out of the chair and they were the same places I always have a problem getting as close as I'd like as well. My dad did get nicked by his barber once on the chin, I was amazed that mine didn't nick my mole. When I started shaving I couldn't get my mole shaved closely without bleeding for quite a while afterwards, I've wondered if this will be a problem again when learning to use a straight.

Overall it was a great experience and it's proven that straight razor shaving is something I will enjoy if for no other reason that the shave will not have to be such a dreaded experience. It's also convinced me that even if someone has been shaving with a straight for a while that they should get a professional shave if they've never had one. It's a very relaxing experience and other than the TVs going in the background and the occasional sound of the hot lather machine really takes you back in time for a little while.

The also had a pool table which could come in really handy if they were busy and you didn't have an appointment.

Nice review. Thanks for the information. What I found was that I give myself a shave that is as good as, or even better, than one I got from my barber...

    Thanks.

Yeah, I figure after some practice I could give myself a better shave with a straight than I got there too, but for people that haven't had the barbershop shave experience I think they would appreciate the hot lather and hot towels. Of course you can probably get the hot towel part by microwaving a few damp towels, but I really want a hot lather machine now... I've been thinking about that and I think the best way might be to get one of those coffee cup warmers and putting the shaving mug on it to keep it hot.
