Thread: Professional Barber Shaves-Squawkbox

Hello All,
Those that know me know I have been stuck in Afghanistan for the last little bit but I am getting ready to leave later today. On the way out I get a short lay-over in Dubai. Recently I found out that they have several shops that do a real old fashioned straight razor shave. I am going to try it out later today and will post with the results. I am also going to try and pump these guys for info on spots to possibly pick up some razors while I am in town. I have heard that this part of the country isn't really great for knives of any sort but maybe they have something down in the Souk or at the market. Dubai has high end everything so I am sure I can find some new Thiers-Issard and Dovo at one of the shops but I am on a vintage kick lately so maybe I'll pick something up. If not I will let you know how the shave turned out.

I've been going to a barber in Edmonton for a few years now, and they started offering shaves this year. My barber is good, as I recently discovered she has the RAD, though some of the others are still learning. It is pricey, it what isn't in Alberta, but they do have free beer/scotch/rum/etc.

Oh before I forget, it's called The Men's Room in Mayfield Common.

Im trying to find an old type Barbershop in Central Texas that does the hot shaves, not sure if there are any of them left around here... we Texans are pretty stubborn about some things... so I hope there are some out there... a smart business would cater to the women on one side, and have a nice old school Barber on the other, so while she is getting nails done I can get a shave!

I had a day off out of town, and while looking for a physio place, I came across a barber in Cold Lake, Alberta. The place is called Crew barbers and stylists. It was about $25 for a shave, and the man doing them is an enthusiast, and good at his craft. The only downside is that it was a feather pro, and not a proper stright, but I guess it's the law. There is an armed forces base up here, so for our members in uniform, if you end up in Cold Lake, I recommend them.

I visited a barbershop one town over from me after seeing an ad from them saying they gave straight razor shaves. What I got was one of those disposable shavette things. The picture in the ad even showed a real straight razor so when I asked them why they were using a shavette they tried telling me it was the same thing.....needless to say im not going back. If a barber tries to pass off a disposable as a straight then hes either lying or off his rocker.

My friend owns a place in Port Jeff Long Island with the same name. Small world. No hot towel shaves though

I've been 'on the road' for almost a month and my goatee was scraggly and lopsided plus I needed a haircut. Turns out there is an excellent barbershop in Singapore called "The Hounds of Baskerville". THere was a short wait, which I didn't mind. The whole place has the look and feel of what your man-cave and the locals, both customers and staff, are garrolous and animated.

The finest taxi driver in the world is a gentleman named "Kuldip Singh Mann" Cool Dip has on many occasions advised me to never let a Chinese touch my beard, as only Indians truly understand how to trim a beard. "And it just so happens I know an excellent barber just down the road from your plant in Malaysia, sir!"

Nevertheless, I let the barber have at. I give him a solid "A". The whole experience was entirely satisfactory, especially considering how long I have been away from wife, kids, dogs, smoked brisket, and my workbench and how oh-so-very-grumpy that makes me.

Two observations. First, his razor didn't seem any sharper than mine. I felt good about that. Second, my technique resembles, more or less, a window washer with a squeegee. He, on the other hand, would stretch a patch between thumb and forefinger and 'scrub scrub scrub'. I'll go back next time I'm here.

Does anyone know of a shaving barber in Oslo or (better) along the L12 towards Kongsberg?

First and last barbershop shave was 1988 in what was supposed to be a great barbershop. Ahh to be that young again with all the knowledge I have now.
I was in town, Irvine, PA for a 'special occasion'; a buddies wedding.
I was pampered; hot towel, hot lather but left with the worst irritation EVER.
Thinking back on it, it was a shavette.
I think my irritation lasted longer than the marriage.

Was in Portugal on vacation and in Lisbon in the Chiado square, I see the barbershop, and go in for the shave. He had a hot towel on my face for about 20 seconds and then proceeded to shave with a shavette loaded with a derby blade. One pass and touch up was it for a below average shave, oh and got 3 cuts, one being very deep that he had a hard time to stop the cut from bleeding.
