if you have a choice a completely seperate 1/2 bath as we call it here, meaning no shower or tub, is great. I would still seperate the toilet in the main bathroom, but nothing beats the complete privacy of a far seperated bathroom nobody really wants to use. from 12-18yo my family had a house that had a 1/2 bath off the living room for company and other use while downstairs. there was also, in the very back of the house off the laundry room, another 1/2 bath. probably in all those years I used it 20-30 times. I don't think my mom or brother ever did. my dad used it every single day there were newspapers stacked in there. I'm sure he loved never being interrupted.

Thanked: 335My vote>>
Two bathrooms. One the way mama wants it to maintain peace in the family and another one for yourself with a toilet, sink, and shower - large enough for reasonable guy-type elbow room, some linen storage, and a magazine rack. You'll be using the auxillary bathroom/shave den so use durable, long lasting, easily cleanable surfaces: ceramic tile is good, stone is good, narrow grout joints are good, solid surface materials are generally good; avoid plastic laminates for counters as the substrate typically used is not water resistant and an unsopped-up oops may blow up the countertop. Oh, and keep the colors not white as that (non)color requires constant or even more frequent cleaning. Matte finishes are in the plus column too. If you have to go with something flat on the walls to paint, use real plaster if you can - it will not harbor mold.
Good luck

Thanked: 1212Toilets used to be in bathrooms for historical reasons. Prior to the water closet, people had a separate shîthouse outdoors, and a sink vessel in the kitchen to take a bath.
When modern plumbing came around, there were initially only one or two rooms in a house having the plumbing to accommodate a water closet. One was the kitchen, hence the choice was easy...
None of those reasons exist today, except when you're on a really tight budget, and I mean really tight.
Bathrooms should be clean relaxing places where every member of the household can feel at ease, while taking care of personal hygiene.
It's obvious that someone defecating in the same place is going to interfere with that premise. Both for the one brushing his teeth as the one with the mild diarrhea.
Ask your wife, why it's so important for her to have a toilet in the bath room. Maybe having a bidet in your bathroom, at the spot where your wife envisions the toilet, can be a good compromise for resolving the disagreement.
I have two toilets in my home, one upstairs and one downstairs. They are both separate of the one bathroom we have.
