Thread: Touring the Razor's Edge

I'm putting together a study in what goes on with razors and shaving well beyond the scope of the naked eye.

Everything I'm going to do will be at 200 power.

Here is an Arm hair (my own).



Here is the enemy, which we attacking with our weapons - facial hair (my own).



Here is the weapon - honed, stropped and ready for battle.





And now..... off for a shave with that razor. Next we'll look at the edge (and the face) after shaving.

Here's some more of the story.....

Some closeup looks at the same beard (hair) as seen in my first post - but after shaving.

Some observations: The edge of the razor after shaving looks virtually the same with no "fin damage" or wear and if you'll notice the beard growth, it's actually cut slightly under the surface of the skin and STRAIGHT across instead of slicing the beard diagonally. This is because the razor was sharp enough - the beard prepped well enough - the angle correct and just enough pressure for the razor to be able to contact the hair as the skin is pressed down, catching it right at the root and then cleanly lopping it off. Because you can control the pressure, angle and even the sharpness of a straight razor and because you CAN'T do that with safety razors, I believe that a quality, well maintained straight razor in trained hands with a well-prepped beard can shave closer than a safety razor.
