Thanked: 3795If possible, you might want to alter your title. How often I hone is drastically different from how frequently I touch up a particular razor. If you have a decent barber hone coming in the mail, you might find that you won't need to do touch ups as frequently. The touch ups will likely only need 3 to 5 strokes to get it sharp again. Barber hones are fast, fine, effective, and a great bargain. They can be all you need to maintain a razor that has been honed properly.

Thanked: 953to answer the question seriously, I think I'd touch up my razors every 10 uses to keep them fighting fit and kept up. Could go further, generally won't go that long, as I like honing and would rather never get to that point.

Thanked: 41I really like my stones, but my razors in the rotation stay sharp TOOOOOO long. The only option to use my hones is to buy more dull razors.

Thanked: 37I hit the pasted strop with a few laps every five or so shaves. The actual stones don't see the blade until every 20-30 shaves. If I feel any grabbing I might hit the stones sooner.
I know some people will think this is honing too often. I am just not that concerned with my razors lasting only 50 years instead of 75 years. My first Dovo that I purchased in the mid 80's is still alive and kicking very nicely. It easily has another 30 years on it.

Thanks for all the replies and info. It's always interesting to get the other viewpoints and compare. I am excited about the barber hone when it gets here! One of the vintage razors I picked up shaves like a beast off my norton 8k, but man is it rough. My face felt like a pumice stone had been taken across it last night for a while after. So not very smooth off that grit, although it shaved very well.
