Default I need some help with perspective

TALK ME OFF THE LEDGE . . . PLEASE!!

I have 13 straight razors on my watch list on the bay. There are two especially that I see that are as Ferris Buller said "So Cherry . . .!"; beefy looking (8/8's . . .drool!), from a manufacturer that I have always admired and wanted that would normally be close to $200 I think.

    Unfortunately there is a thing called a budget . . . . . , family, kids, etc., etc.,

I have returned to SR shaving after a 15 year absence and purchased a DOVO kit from Vintage; Black Best Quality that I upped to a 6/8, also upgraded to a 3" red strop . . . etc. As a back-up for travel and until my face gets used to the SR I also purchased a Parker DE w/ a bunch of Merker blades.

The only real thing left to do is to work on my uber-lather (thank you Jockeys!).

    Here is where I need some guidance;
    1. Will there always be "razors I want", on the bay?
    2. Am I okay with what I have now as a start for several months (provided I don't accidentally destroy the blade)? I have read members speak of, "several in their rotation."

This could easily become a compulsion for me; as in always wanting the next razor.

Any advise from a member sharing the similar experience whould be greatly appreciated. . . .

    The Alpsman

    Default addiction

This is addiction and many of us have it.
question about your razor .will you find blade what you like later on. YES i am sure you will.May be better one but there will be price issues.
Lets say i used to buy dorko razor for 30 same blade after 4 years is 130$.
should you stop yourself buying more ? yes i think so. is this easy no way hard to do. i am struggling myself but what can I do. i am trying every single day sell as much stuff i have . (problem is to sell them is painful too. some of them you get attach to.)
This is what i have done.
I get the best razor set i can get then i i said promise myself i will get rid rest . since then i am slowly trying to get rid of rest. good luck to me on this.

Try your best and buy what you love then get rid of rest and stop yourself buying more. To say all this is very easy but to do it hard very hard.

At the end i should say we really don't have a bad habit we don't use drugs etc just shaving supplies this is just fun. Every person should have some interest.
    this is what we like.

    Hey Alpsman,

    I'm a shaver, not a collector. I have used a
Dovo #41 SS blade primarily for the past few
years, but since I got in on the SRP Livi group
    buy I've been into that 7/8" ATS-34 blade. I
like shaving with just one razor, it's a great
way to work on your technique.

You can either keep buying razors, or take
your time -- this is a long-term thing

    Hey Alpsman,
The answer to all your questions is a resounding YES!

There will always be new razors coming up on the bay or in antique shops. Especially in this economy, people are parting with their "useless" collections. Plus, we get tired of our razors sometimes and "switch" them over at the classifieds here.

I'll tell you from personal experience that and 8/8 is not very well balanced and can be fairly unwieldy. Its nice and big though, don't get me wrong. I feel all manly when shaving with a big chopper. However, the manly aspect does not outweigh the ease of use factor. To me at least.

My plan to control my RAD is I bought a vintage style hinge top box, once I build a rack, should hold 28 razors. I have 26 so far in various states of repair. Once I get to 28I will only allow myself another purchase if I can get rid of one of the 28.
Only time will tell if this will work.
If this fails I will have to hand over all responsibility to my wife.
    "Sweety, can I buy this?"

    Randy,

I was really waiting for someone to provide for me the objective analysis, diagnosis, and treatment for my condition - well done!! LOL!

Yeah, I kind of figure RAD had nestled it way in. . . BTW, you live in one of my favorite places in N. America . . .especially during Oktoberfest! Thanks for the reply.

Leighton, this is actually a very good point. As I told another member, at times my eyes are bigger than my ability (or stomach, wallet, credit, etc., etc,). I am re- acquainting myself with the SR, so perhaps I just need to settle in getting technique down, then get looking. Man, do I really want a nice Henckle . . . .

    THANKS ALL!

Maybe you could divert your obsessive thought patterns from razor acquisition to getting your current razor very sharp-- and work on honing skills. But, then again, that means the risk of seeking out and acquiring various hones, so you just might be equally scr$*ed...

i think we our situations have some similarities. my first razor was a Dovo Best Quality, i keep a DE for travel (though mine is a Gillette Fatboy) and i went through (and am still kind of in) an ebay frenzy stage.

with ebay i find that i try not to get too attached to anything on there as that can make you bid some crazy amounts. i would be much more apt to buy a razor from the classifieds here.

i still use my Dovo regularly and really like it. i am not about show pieces, i like a good shaver. there will always be a razor that catches your eye and sparks the addiction but, for me at least, i just keep in mind that you only use them one at a time, though this might not deter everyone

i have a list of certain razors that i would like to acquire in the future and i keep my eyes open for them. my next one will be a wedge as i am dying to try one out.

your set up looks great and i don't doubt it will work great, if there is one suggestion i can make, it would be to think about buying a hone for future touch ups. it may start another addiction though
