Default My Daily Shavers in Gallery

Since posting my older razors for sale people have asked what am I keeping. I posted my daily rotation in the gallery. Mostly big blade German razors but a pair of smaller ones that are simply pretty.

A couple of newly ground Friodur blades in NOS scales, a huge Filarmonica, some odd name German razors...Holeka, Lutz, Zaliel, a trusty Dovo Special and a Thiers-Issard Spartacus.

Whats new in your rotation? Been a while since we did that thread and there are plenty of new guys here since then.

I just got one used that's in great condition.

I'm a big guy and I now find I'm more comfortable with big razors. I got one of those NOS 7/8 Henckels Friurdor blades with new scales. I have an 8/8 Zwilling, a 6/8 Filarmonica, and a 7/8 Corneta, all in excellent used condition.

    Joe,
Same deal here. The larger razors just feel better to me although when starting the downward stroke at the top of my cheek it is harder to see past that large blade since it is near your eye and line of site. I still find the 6/8 the perfect balance but like the look of the big ones.

I've noted on the Yahoo! forum before that the most popular size of razor during the golden age of straights was 5/8. People are generally bigger today due to diet and more available medical care, not to mention several generations of an expanded gene pool. That seems to me to be why more guys today, percentage-wise, like the 6/8 razors, or larger. They would tower over their great-grandparents in most cases, like Abe Lincoln (6'4") over his US Civil War grenerals (avg. 5'6").

It's not just the size. When I got a Feather, I found that the heavier razor was more to my liking. It lets me shve with less pressure, which Igot used to with a DE.

BTW, I made an interesting discovery. I thought I was a total falure at honing and stropping because I couldn't get my razors to shave like the Feather. It would never pass the shave test and I just finished with the Feather. Then, I found out from guys who use both that you can't get a regular str8 as sharp as the Feather and even with maximum sharpness, they drag a little more. I found that to be true even with razors I got from you and Lynn. Based on that informatin, I know I've done a good job on a few razors. They shave well, just not the way I was expecting.

Now, I understand what new str8 shavers are talking about when they mention skin soreness (I have very sensitive skin). It accumulates with a str8 (less with a heavier one). It didn't really happen with the Feather, because I use it without pressure. So, I can't use a regular str8 every day. I just swap it out for my DE. Maybe my skin will be able to handle it eventually.

I agree with people are bigger, I'm 6' 6" 230# me and ABE could have ben brothers
I like the weight of the larger ones. Some razors, even smaller ones simply weigh more and seem to shave better for me.
I shaved for years with a Mach 3, no soap, just hot water and quick scrape......I guess that toughend my skin to where irritation is something I am immune from.

My current rotation includes Puma 7/8, Kikuboshi 7/8, W & B 7/8, Claus 7/8, G. Wostenholm 6/8, and smaller Pearlduck 5/8, Kayser-Ellison 4/8 for my neck (just can't seem to go against the grain with the bigger blades).

I usually have a Puma, Henckels, TI, Boker and flavor of the week in my rotations. The biggest problem I have is getting to my rotation considering the amount of honing I do for other people.....lol. Have fun. Lynn
