    Default Razor Advertising

    Hi All,

Has anyone in their hunt for old razors and information ever come across any advertising from old straight razor makers promoting their product.

Along the same line, has anyone come across add for "new and improved" razors that helped the straight razor fall out of favor? What kind of line did they use to turn gentlemen away from straights?

    Best wishes,
    Mike

How does no stropping, no honing sound? Actually, men were slow to give up stropping and honing. They tried all sorts of gadgets to put a DE in to resharpen it. Keep in mind, the original Gillette DE blades were several times thicker that todays. King Gillette even started a "send them in for new ones" campaign with little envelops to get men out of the stropping habit. There's a lot of shaving history in "The Complete Gillette Collector's Handbook" ISBN 0-9620987-2-8 ..... Here are a few ads I've run across:

Thanks! Exactly what I was wondering. "No more stropping and honing;" all the things we find fun. Well, they say things go in circles. It might be interesting to read a copy of that book, "The SCience of Shaving."

    Best wishes,
    Mike

The little book was only about 2"x3" and fit inside the razor boxes. It just talked about the necessity of good preparation of the face and beard (sound familiar?) before starting the shave .... plus some plugs for Gillette.
