Electric razors were all I knew unfortunately! A irritable shave followed by a hot shower to sooth my neck and beard. The straight just seemed fun and nostalgic. It was a little frustrating at first with the learning curve and initial purchasing, but now it is awesome.

I'm not exactly sure, but I also use a fountain pen and my watch is the kind you need to wind up. I also shoot a Howard Hill longbow...

Thanked: 317I started for the same reason I smoke pipe tobacco, and had already been using soap and a brush instead of canned goo, and love victorian literature, and wear a nice old woven wool hat year round, and prefer 3-piece suits to 2-piece.
I've always had a soft spot for anything you might describe as "old school."
The reason I've stayed with it is because after a week I was getting the closest most comfortable shaves of my life, and they keep getting better every shave. In fact, if they continue to get better at the same rate, a year from now, all I'll have to do is unfold my razor, and the hair on my face will simply disintegrate at the sight of it.

I started using a DE when I noticed all the corner stores over here sold blades. I started using a straight because of all the pretty pictures on the internet.

Besides all the obvious reasons, it gives the best shave, it's better for your skin, etc., etc.. But there is something really cool about shaving with something that most people think is dangerous!
and, besides,.....stropping is really sexy!

I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Something inside kept chipping away at my resistance until I finally gave in! Although I have strayed a time or two I never gave up on straights and never looked back!

Thanked: 235I started with a straight because I thought it looked cool and would make me more manly. Now I like it because it turns the chore of shaving every morning into me time. I find it so enjoyable and relaxing. I also find it extreamly satisfying to collect and restore razors and razor associated stuff.

After trying a handful of different cartridge type razors, all yielding poor results. The razor burns and shaving bumps were getting worse. At first I switched to a cheap boars brush and soap. After a few months, I started looking at Str8'son ebay. I almost bought a Zeepk kit, thankfully I stumbled across this site.
