Default I thought RAD would be gradual

So for anyone following the life and times of this lowly n00b, you'll know I've only been at this for a bit over a week. Dinged my razor on Sat, and due to the holiday weekend have not yet been able to send it out to get honed.

Over the weekend I picked up a J.A. Henckels to try my hand at polishing up something old and to keep my mind busy until I could send my Dovo off to Lynn for repair. I also found with that a completely unmarked hone of some kind. It seems to be very fine, and ridiculously hard. I've been trying to lap it with wet/dry sandpaper for the past 2 days off and on, but the middle is still just a fraction off. It changes color from a dark blackish to a light gray when it makes contact with the sandpaper, so after the first few grids I just started relying on color. Anyhow, I digress.

Buying 1 vintage razor piqued my interest, so i went out again to an antique store today to see what there was to see.

Now I have 5 more vintage razors.

I found a booth marked 50% off with a slew of them, and bought up all of the ones with what I could judge to be decent blades. The list is as follows:

Joseph Allen & Sons Sheffield. stamped NON - XLL by the name. Blade is etched "Medium Size Hollow Ground". Black Scales.

Wade & Butcher. Blade is etched "The Celebrated Anglo-Saxon Concave Razor". Black scales.

Keen Kutter "Royal". Blade is Etched "The Celebrated Razor" and has "Royal" with an eagle type emblem on it. Black scales also etched "Royal"

Torrey Razor Co Worcester, Mass. Spike style blade with cream scales.

The last oddity I picked up has no makers marks of any kind. It has cream scales and a barbers notch (all of the blades except the Torrey have barber notches). The weird thing about it is the monkeys tail and most of the shank are made of wood. And the monkeys tail is backwards. I don't know if someone just screwed up putting it together or if there is a purpose for that.

Anyway, this post is already 10X too long, so I'll leave it at that. You're the only folks who would potentially care about anything I just said.

I plan to take some pics once I get them polished up and maybe post them in the show & tell section.

RAD can be a slippery slope. After my first 50 or so I became much more discriminating. The next 50 were in better condition but cost more. Now new acquisitions are few and far between but they are usually mighty fine. In the meantime enjoy yourself.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Definitely less the cancer I thought it would be and more of an ebola quickness.

Don't feel bad at all. I bought 25 off Fleabay today and I am sure most of them are junk. For me its as much fun fixing them up as it is to shave with them.
    Good LUck!

Thanks for the welcome Silver. I was glad when I finally convinced the Mrs. to join up.

As for the AD skirmishes, I think we'll just have to work out something fair...maybe arm wrestling.

It's happening to me too... I started looking yesterday and I have three razors on the way.
I hope this all pans out, or else I'll feel pretty silly.

    Cheers,
    Rick
