Thread: I thought RAD would be gradual

Thanks for the welcome Silver. I was glad when I finally convinced the Mrs. to join up.

As for the AD skirmishes, I think we'll just have to work out something fair...maybe arm wrestling.

It's happening to me too... I started looking yesterday and I have three razors on the way.
I hope this all pans out, or else I'll feel pretty silly.

Well, there are gradual ways of revealing ourselves...as long as we keep in mind that the lulz don't really belong here. There are no gentlemen among mudkipz.

In any event, I was once a responsible SR buyer and carefully considered each purchase, weighing the pros and cons of each before parting with money for them. That lasted exactly 8 days. Then Rapid Onset RAD (RORAD) hit hard. 10 weeks and over 60 razors later (mostly bay project razors) I finally tempered it a bit. Either that or all the razors on the bay that I thought looked worthy are gone. Also bought a few here in the classifieds as well as a dozen or so new ones from SRD, Invisible Edge, and a few others.

What follows is my personal experience and NOT to be construed as good advice. You'll of course do it all but don't blame me! :-)

A sure sign of RORAD is when the mail delivery guy starts to make comments to the wife about the huge number of curious packages from various European countries. Another sign is the insane amount of "accessories" that I started ordering. Soaps, creams, pre and post shave oils, balms, salves, as well as multiple bars of blood clotting agents. And lest we forget, one must have many strops, stones, tubes of MAAS, magnifying devices, vises, all sandpaper grits known to man, a cordless Dremel to go with the AC powered one as well as every "kit" that attaches to a Dremel. Then of course there's the boxes and other devices to hold all those beauties and the brushes.

Naturally you'll also need scales materials and pins. Lots of materials. You'll get to know the closest woodworking-hobby store salespeople by name. You'll make deals for good quality exotic wood scraps that are at least 7 inches by 2 inches by about 1/4. Did I mention sandpaper? If you look hard enough you can go to at least 20K grit there. ..and there's a cool micro-something sandpaper that goes to 30K.

Lest we forget, there's also a serious need for a belt sander, a scroll saw, more exotic Dremel bits and attachments, and more felt wheels. Gotta have a drawer full of felt wheels! Then someone will likely just lay a power buffer or grinder on you because you have good neighbors - and then you'll be looking for various wheels to attach to that. And then more soaps, creams, and aftershave balms because someone here mentioned how well a certain one works. Just get a dozen Wool Fat soap pucks.

Don't forget the CDs! There's the really good one by Lynn as well as the great restoration one by Bill Ellis that's a must have. While you're on Bill's site you might as well pick up one or two of those really cool magnetized blade holders so you stop sanding your fingers.... You'll eventually decide your office or shop is not nearly large enough so there's the trips to Lowe's and Home Depot for materials to move the wall out about 8 feet. More lighting, more sandpaper, and all the while, razors are arriving at a fevered pitch. Don't forget to leave feedback for all those truthful and experienced Ebay straight razor sellers!

Nah, RAD doesn't creep up on you. RORAD jumps you like a crack-crazed monkey on steroids that hasn't eaten in a month. Hope you have some savings you can stand to part with! ...or a good amount available on a credit card. :-)
