Thread: What attracted you to the straight razor?

OK, I am curious what attracted straight razor shavers to the straight razor? Why pick a straight razor over a double edge?

It was the image of the straight razor as sort of "bad to the bone" that did it for me, the same reason why women are attracted to the bad boy on the motorcycle.

The thing that atracted me to straight razor shaving was, at first, the idea of it being much cheaper than cartridges. I was really fed up with those... I never thought about shave quality, "bad-ass" factors or anything of the sort. But the inclination must have come from my interest in all things vintage. And the concept is, indeed, vintage. Very... But economy was the thing that got me started. I did the math and here I am... hooked on great shaves that I get from a thing that most of my friends consider to be sinister!

This has been asked before, but I'll answer again.

Because it was cheaper than buying those expensive mach 3 blades every few months. I was actually very good for about 6 years and stayed with one razor and one strop and 3 hones. Actually, I bought 1 of those for my knives. But anyway, I saved a lot of money over those years. And then I got tired of the same razor and wondered if there were raozrs that stayed sharper longer... And that was the end for me.

Well I've seen lots of them during my years on the wet shaving forums in germany because of my soap.
First of all I found some really pretty.
But then what really fascinated me was their simple functionality.
The wedge - pin - handle - part that opens the scales just in the right way to host the blade and the flex of the material that comes together again at the pivot end. The point where the blade stops just right when its closed. The buttery feel when the pin is right. Then of course the blade itself and its fool proof design to hone and strop them always to ultimate sharpness.
They are simply wonderful!

I needed an alternative to electric shaving, something that did not irritate my skin as much. There is a nostalgic, cool attraction to straight razor shaving and if some of you deny that it's not part of the reason you got into it, you're lying. I chose the straight over DE originally because I am an all or nothing kind of guy. If I am going to do something, I take the hard way and get it done right. Here I am now shaving comfortably and confidently with a straight razor.
