ive known a few people that loaded bags and checked bags at DTW, and they stole all kinds of stuff.
they were always trying to sell ipods and anything else of value that could fit in your pocket.
and theyve all said the same thing, yes, people steal from the checked bags. if you put a little luggage lock on theyll bust it off.


i dont think most of them would want to steal razors, just becuase they then have to carry a razor around all day. plus, there not of obvious value.

when the average person sees a straight they dont want to touch it.
theyre lookin for nice compact cameras, ipods, things that can easily be sold.

I normally take 3 str8s for a week's business trip. I wrap them up and put them inside a hiking boot or shoe in the checked luggage. I also take along a strop, brush, soap and aftershave balm all in a little toiletry box and never had a problem. Of course I lock the suitcase with one of those TSA approved locks.

In any event regardless of what anyone tells you, don't try to take it onboard in a carry-on. That scanning machine will pick it up easily and if the guy at the screen is awake he'll have some cool new blades!

Stick it down your sock and claim it is screws in your ankle that is making the detector go off :P

note that due to récent évents if you take an air france flight I strongly advise taking a Stainless Straight razor, it copes better with sea water !

I recently had a holiday in Australia where I seriously indulged my RAD. Before my flight back to Bangkok I checked with Thai Airways if I would be ok with them in my checked bags. It seem that as long as they are well packed you won't have a problem. The main concern isn't the bad guys getting at your razor in mid flight. The main concern is an unprotected sharp edge penetrating your bag and thus damaging some one elses stuff. If you pack your razor in a manner in which you would for it to not be damaged you will be fine.
That however doesn't cover the odd opportunistic theif or incompenant baggage handlers who send your bags on a tour of six differnt countries before they get to you.

Actually....last time the idiots made me take off my shoes before going through the metal detector.

I have a decent W&B that I could live without if I lost it that is now my travel razor. I've flown with it in my checked baggage with no problems. Like anything in your checked baggage though, there's a chance it won't be there on the other end, so I wouldn't take your favorite razor. Take one that will offer a nice shave, but that you could live without.

I definitely wouldn't risk carrying any on, though!

The tooth brush tube idea is a great one for razor travel storage. Making it look like something that a potential thief would not be interested in is the key. I return shipped a hearing aid to my father in Alaska which he had sent me for repair. I packed it in a jewelry container - a ring box. It was the right size and tough enough for the rigors of shipping. Someone in the Post Office recognized the shape through the padded envelope, (I know, I should have used a box), ripped open the rather tough envelope, and stole the "ring".

Thieves abound, so making your valuables look otherwise can't hurt.
