airline travel with straight razors?
Does anyone have any horror stories about getting razors confiscated while travelling? I've only been shaving with a straight for a few weeks, but I have a vacation coming up and i really don't want to switch back to the cartridge. I'm *assuming* that it would be okay in the checked luggage, but security screening has been so inconsistent last few years I don't know what to expect...

if by "okay" you mean "stolen by tsa thugs" then you are absolutely correct.

Thanked: 37I have always packed my razor into my checked bags without problems. I was told by a TSA gal that you can take a straight even in your carry-on. I wouldn't risk it though. I suspect she didn't know what a straight was.
Let us know how things work for you.

I wouldn't try to carry-on a straight
I've checked razors in luggage many times and never had a problem - but I've never had anything stolen from my checked bags either. I put my razors in a plastic toothbrush container in my dopp kit. I think the the thief would have to be pretty thorough to think to look in there - but you never know...I usually don't travel with my most valuable blades.

You never know what can happen once your bag disappears behind the counter. Common sense says don't bring your good razors. get a few cheapos that shave good.

I put my straights in my checked baggage. The straights are "buried" in my dopp kit under toothpaste, hairbrush, shampoo etc. I have not had a problem yet. Of course, my high value razors stay home.

This has worked for me. I dont think they would know or care if you had a bomb in your checked baggage as long as they could rummage through your carry on. BTW I dont fly much anymore the whole TSA thing is quite senseless, unnecessary and wouldnt stop anybody intent on anything. It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. I don't see an issue as long as it is packed safely and checked below the bird. As with anything in life, there is always a risk of it getting damaged or stolen.

Thanked: 2If any of you are going to fly with a straight in your carry-on, please save yourself and the TSA officer the trouble and just mail your unwanted razor directly to me! I'll be happy to take it off your hands, and you won't have to miss your flight while you talk to the nice man with the badge for an hour or two.
I've had several pocket/utility knives stolen out of my checked baggage about three or four years ago. I think that, now that the Security Theater Agency has ramped up so much (and, at least in the Bay Area, they fired all the vaguely competent, non-citizen-but-at-least-they-were-honest Filipinos and replaced them with thugs-who-wannabe-cops with more acceptable paperwork), camouflage and discretion are your best options. Invest in a Wapi (+1 for durable scales) and a toothbrush holder, and worst-case you end up out the cost of a steak dinner.
I flew to China last fall and had no problems flying with my razor, except for finding shaving soap. I don't think my brush has recovered yet from the cheap hotel soap I had to use when my trusty puck of Williams finally gave up.
Oh, and there was the nice friend of mine I made while I was there... she took one look at my razor and asked me if I seriously put that thing next to my face. Some things never change no matter where you are....
