    Default ISO case/box for razors

    Hi there!

I'm in need of a box or case or something that will hold 5 (not 7) razors.

I was thinking something along the lines of a felt-lined box with a little clasp on it or something........

I don't want a wood box if I can help it. Borrrring.

Anybody know who might make/sell such a thing?

    Thanks!

I have been looking for a long time for the perfect razor display case...and I cant find it..the closest thing were various wooden watch cases but the dividers were all glued / attached and couldnt be removed...heres what i want:

    1.Glass top

2.large enough to lay flat 5-7 razors...we all spend so much time searching for and buying amazing custom scales...why hide them in a vertical row / divider...they should be displayed properly...

    3. Black felt lining

    4. Nice wood grain - burwood would be best...

    5. 1 slide out lower drawer

    6. Overall, a large modern looking box that matches the quality of the contents...

Where can I get this? Who can make this?

This discusses and shows pictures of some cases from Hobby Lobby -- an arts and crafts store. If you don't have a Hobby Lobby nearby perhaps some other large arts and crafts store will have something similar.

    Default Felt lining

There are a couple of ways to go about this. I think you might have the most luck (i.e. find the box you want sooner at a reasonable price) if you look at all boxes in terms of a frame. Any box, wood, metal, whatever, is a frame with guts. The guts can be removed and restored. Applying felt to the interior of a box is as simple as obtaining the felt from a fabric/hobby store, cutting the felt to size, spraying an adhesive to the back (3M Super 77) and carefully laying the felt in. Be sure to mask the box if you spray the adhesive.

As for the interior, a great way to go is french fitting. That is simply taking a coping saw ($10 or less at Lowes) and cutting an outline of your blades on a board, applying felt to the board (outlines cut out already, of course) and inserting the board in the box frame.

Consider cigar boxes and jewelry boxes for box frames to work with. EBay has a slew of these at rediculously low prices. Keep in mind, it's very difficult to determine quality from an internet picture alone. I'd stick to local sources if quality were an issue. I'd probably even consider browsing flea markets.

Another approach is simply hiring a talented carpenter to build you one- if money and time is no object.

Hope this helps in some way.

"the closest thing were various wooden watch cases but the dividers were all glued"

Keep in mind, all glues can be weakened with heat. If I found a case I liked I would take a heat gun to the interior.

The boxes that I liked the most were:

Peyton Watch Box - Storage & Organization at NetShops

    Wood Watch / Jewelry Box

20-WATCH CLEAR TOP BURLWOOD FINISH STORAGE DISPLAY CASE - eBay (item 160046756655 end time Jun-17-09 12:04:27 PDT)

Do you really think it would be possible to remove the dividers? then insert new felt lining? what other instructions do you think i would need?

Has anyone tried to so such a modification?

Check Michaels, it's one of those hobby shop stores. if they have one by you. someone here got one, lined it with some felt, and put hooks in it he got from home depot. The hooks look like the letter "L' and hold razor's beautifully...Rich

I've made such modifications myself. The difficulty isn't in removing the interior, it's in placing the felt. As I said, a heat gun is the best tool to do this without scratching/marring the wood. The only thing that poses a problem is the box wood itself. It's difficult to know exactly what it's made of without actually seeing it but my guess is for the price it's likely a burl vaneer (don't worry, vaneers are still wood, just thin slices) laid over an inexpensive hardwood (Ash). Worse case scenario it's not actually wood but a layer of plastic with a wood design printed on it. In either case, the heat gun is your best removal option but you must protect the case when you do this with some kind of masking. I would attack it from the center of the case.

As for felt, it's very inexpensive. That lining may actually be velux or velvet. Still, relatively inexpensive and worth practicing several times on cheap wood (pine scraps from home depot or lowes) to get the lay in technique right before you attempt it on your box. You'll thank yourself for the practice. Another thing to consider is creating a padded underlay beneath the lining. This is very easy to do with craft foam.

    So,

    1. Measure internal dimensions and note.

1b(optional). create padded foam insert from a single piece of thin black craft foam. This piece should look like a cross and should fold upward without uneven seams.

    2. assemble needed tools, resources (blue painter's tape, heat gun, velvet, very sharp scissors, black craft foam, foam glue, spray adhesive (the lighter the better. 3M super 77 works well but is tricky to control).

    3. Wrap any exposed wood in blue painters masking tape. If you can remove the glass lid without damaging it that's preferred but if not, no biggie, just cover it as well.

    4. Apply heat to inside center of box. Work from center to box walls, avoid heating wood walls. Do this in short bursts of heat testing to see if felt/dividers are loosening.

    5. Gradually remove felt and dividers.

    6. Clean away excessive glue (scrape softly or sand smooth).

7a(optional). spray back of foam, line box with foam padding.

7b. cut felt/velvet lining to match existing internal dimensions. Again, the trick is to avoid seam overlaps.

    8. hold new lining in place with light clamp or weight. The lighter the better. Place flat, smooth object between clamp/weight and lining. smooth wood preferred but clean cardboard will work fine.

    9. Let glue dry for 24 hours.

    10. remove blue painters tape and reassemble lid if you've removed.

That Dovo box is a beauty. I'm certain you could remove the lining and reline but a couple of issues come to mind. First, the fabric on the bottom where the straps are would likely have to be discarded. Of course you could replace it with a solid colored fabric that does match one color of the pattern. Second, you'd have to be careful with spacing. The box looks like it is meant to hold the razors flat. A third row may crowd the space and allow for razors to rub. I'd see if I could get internal dimensions from the vendor and work it out on graph paper first before ordering.

    Best of luck! :-)
