In 1955 when yours truly went to Andy's Barber Shop in the Bronx, N.Y for a haircut and had to wait while Andy was shaving his customers how much did Andy charge for a shave AND how much of a tip did he get?

Well, let me lay out my logic, and when we find out the answer, we'll see if my logic has any bearing on reality (please note that there has never been any statistically significant correlation between my logic and reality in the past, so don't expect much);

Federal minimum wage in '55 was (as near as I can tell) set at $1.00 an hour. I imagine a shave would cost the same as a haircut because they take the same amount of time for the barber, roughly. Generally, the cost of a haircut at a barber has cost me a bit more (by 20-30%) than what the minimum wage is set at (this is not a hard and fast rule. In small towns, I find that the barber often runs at or below the mimimum. I tip bigger then because I feel guilty getting a haircut for only $8).

That's how I came up with $1.25, and I figure the guy was a big tipper. Getting a barber shave in '55 was treating yourself special, as most men shaved themselves by that time.
