Straight Razor Convention?
Well, maybe I dont mean a convention but a training school. Do any of you folks who live close by ever get together? I could really use some help honing, stroping, etc.

Thanked: 4942We have talked about a "Conclave" for a long time. Could never come up with a location central to enough people. Alot of us have met with other members either when traveling or close to the home. I'm always open when traveling or if anyone passes anywhere close to Cleveland. Lynn

Thanked: 0A conclave sends like a great idea. Maybe we could consider an eastern conclave and a western conclave for those on the left coast. I would certainly be interested in a weekend road trip if I thought I could meet some of the other forum members and see some of their razors, hones etc and learn some new techniques.
I would also be willing to help host at our local country club. We have a number of large meeting rooms where everyone could meet, greet, eat and be entertained. February or March would be a good time to get away from the winter weather. The weather here in Charlotte at that time of year would be cool but not cold and we have no snow to speak of. It may be a good weekend trip to consider. Lots of reasonably hotels, good restaurants and perhaps a round of golf could be arranged. Just a thought of course and I would also be open to something a little more central or even north central if the majority found this to be a better plan. Give it some thought folks and maybe we can get something going.

I'm in! But only if we call it a Symposium instead. That term is more...historic.

Thanked: 0Well let's see how much interest we have. If you think you would be interested in a weekend get-together sometime in February, March or April of 2006 please add your name to this post. I have suggested Charlotte, NC but we could meet more centrally if that works best for the majority.
Let's see how much interest there is out there over the next 2 weeks and I'll compile a list of interested members and the most popular places to host the get-together and I'll post it here 2 weeks from today (August 21).

Thanked: 79Charlotte sounds good to me.
I could use it as an excuse to fly home to visit family (I'm from near Asheville and usually fly into Charlotte first anyway)

Anybody been to Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, TN, near Dollywood? I just got "Standard Guide to Razors" book and they credit alot of photos to SMKW.
I went once, years ago, and mostly remember the knives. One comment in the book was that the place is like a museum for cutting instruments. Such a place like Pigeon Forge that caters to tourists would have tons of hotels and maybe special rates, especially if we pick an off-season time.
Ahhh, the mountains of E. Tennessee, a huge blade facility, and honemeisters to show me just what the hell I am doing wrong. Sounds like a fun weekend.
