Thread: Windfall!

I've told my barber that I use a straight razor. He was very interested that people still use these (he sure doesn't, anymore) and told me if he can find his old ones, that they're mine (this was several months ago). Well, before getting my haircut this past Saturday, he tells me he has some razors for me. He gave me 7 good to mint razors... a henckels, a couple FW engels (one of which has a 6/8+ blade and is absolutely beautiful, I'm for sure keeping this one). All of them are in good shape (save some tarnish and dull edges) and have very interesting scales. I'll post some photos of them, as this is truly a nice lot of razors.

I will most likely end up selling several of them, after giving them a good polish and a honing. I was doing such a good job... I hadn't bought a "new" razor in several months, now I've increased my inventory by more than 50%. I'll probably keep 3 of them, and sell 4 (my barber will be getting the lion's share of the proceeds. However, I should get something for the polishing and sharpening part)... keep your eyes out.

What do you use to polish your razors? By polishing them, does that remove those dark greyish spots or does it just clean up the area without any spots? Thanks.

A lot of folks use a product called MAAS to polish razors. It's available at a lot of Wal-Marts. I found it on the cleaning aisle (Ajax, Comet, furniture polish). It's in a gray & blue package. This stuff is super for removing grunge from a razor.

It will remove those dark greyish spots (which is probably corrosion) depending on how deep they are.

Make sure you get a couple of extra haircuts, bring the kids, bring the neighbors kids......lol. Sounds like your barber is a pretty good guy as well. Lynn

As Kyle suggested, I use Maas. It works great. It really brings tarnished razors to life.

I've been going to this barber for just over 20 years (and I'm only 32!). It is one of those barber shops where there are always some old timers just hanging out, watching the ball game and shooting the breeze. Where haircuts only cost $15... the scheduled times are every 20 minutes, because that's all the time a haircut should really take. Want a your haircut at 1:30? Can't help ya out there... it'll have to be 1:20 or 1:40.

I shaved with the 6/8+ FW Engels this morning and was pleasantly surprised. It is a fine razor.
