    Default New and razorless

    Hi,
    Well ok, I am new.

About to make the shift over to the bright side.

Don't have a razor yet (getting the doco stainless steel inox one), and so stuck on the quattro (nice for the disposable ones).

Now I was wondering (before I start my own bloodbath), does any of you use the straight razor to shave their head totally?

If not, here goes nothing ......

I think there have been a few who have tried the head shave. Keep us posted. The hardest part I'm told is the part you can't see.....lol. Lynn

Erm, took me a while to get it done decently with the "safety" blades, bunch of cut ears (yes ears, just imagine razoring up a cheek and slipping :-s), neck and got knows which cuts I haven't noticed.

I seem to read in your reply that those who have tried have not been succesful (probably makes a difference if you know your head's contours, I do after 9 years of throwing money in the disposable razor dustbin. Just remember when doing the neck and lower back of the head to keep your head bent forward. Any movement whilst shaving will cut, even with the safety ones.

Guess it will be a few weeks before I really start on this, but def will keep you posted.

    Side-question:
Does any of you live in Europe as is is virtually impossible to find the decent soaps/shavingcremes in a shop here (and otherwise I have to stick to the online ordering, just a shame to order eg soap, and pay taxes and shipping, this makes it about 2x as expensive as it should). Eg. Trumper soap is nowhere to be found here, will have to order it from the UK.

    Take care,
    Hoekie

    Default Head -

Welcome! Many head who shave their heads use the "HeadBlade" - a device made for just that putpose. They are available all over the place online, and I have seen them in the larger pharmacy chains, as well.

    Good luck!

As I am a masochist and do like a gamble (and hate 10,001 things for the same purpose), live in a country where they have no clue on shaving in general, let alone straight razors and the availability of goods here is virtually none and most of all shipping here is insane, not counting the 19% sales tax when arriving at customs, I'll have a go on the normal blade first (I do have some skills with wielding knives). If no skin is left I'll try the headshavers (never heard of them, thanks).

On the shipping and taxes, eg. a bowl of trumpers will cost me $55 .... :?
Pharmacy chains here, sells, shampoo, deodorants and disposable blades, we really do have a limited amount of things shops offer.
Makes sense though as we only have about 16 m people, basically not enough of a market for profits on many quality goods.

I guess I need to book another trip to the states soon ....

    Thanks for the welcome!

Ps, just checked out the "headshaver", erm, I use a Wilkinson quattro at the moment, works fine, but I want to get rid of the disposables ....

Welcome to the group! Yes we have members who live in Europe and many other countries.
Check the members list for that info or just post a message asking if anyone lives in or near your country.

The Dovo razor will need honing. It is not shaving sharp from the factory but it will be close.
Probably the best bet for you is to obtain a paddle strop and two abrasive pastes.
A 1.0 micron and a 0.5 micron should do the trick. A number of our members use the abrasivce pastes almost exclusively. Tony Miller and Chris Moss are two that come to mind and they would be able to advise you on the best pastes for your situation.

May I suggest you join the parent site over on Yahoo!

Read the help files here and over on the Yahoo site. There is a ton of info available.

The best video available, currently, is available from John West at [email protected]

    Thanks for the info,

I was thinking of getting a strop and pastes straight away with the straight, and to keep it simple, all dovo as well.

I think I need the green paste for sure (think that is the .5 micron).

There is 1 barber here selling the dovo's, and has the strops and paste as well.

Just 1 question, why a paddle strop, and not a hanging one?

    Cheers,
    Hoekie

Good luck with your conversion to straight shaving Hoekie. I'm in the Uk and it seems much easier to get hold of everything in the US. I bought a hone from Ray, and a razor from Lynn (THE starting point for anyone who wants to give straight shaving a go: an SRP-member honed razor), but also got some stuff from a nice chap in Germany.
I'm no expert but have been having a lot of fun with my straight razors over the past 6 months!
The best answer to your strop question is probably to try both out and see what works best for you. I'm happy with my hanging strop, but some people must be happy with paddle strops otherwise they wouldn't be made!
    Cheers,
    Pieter

I think I am getting some stuff as a bd present, if not I will be sure to check your suggestions out!

    Ever tried these people? http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/

I think I would prefer a hanging one as well, just a hunch.

And I was thinking Pieter ... but I get it now (reading the other topic).

Never tried them. Have only bought from diamondedge in the UK, a strop and a brush.

And I was thinking Pieter ... but I get it now (reading the other topic).
Sorry, you lost me there, at "thinking" propbably, not my forte :?

How was Newcastle? A cousin of mine spent half a year, complained about the stench 24/7 on the streets because of all the binge drinking...
    Where in NL are you?

    Pieter
