Unlocking a barber's box
I picked up a barbers box at an antique store for a few dollars.
Only problem is the box is locked open and doesn't have a key, so I can't close it.
If I went to locksmith would they be able to find/make me a key that would work with it, or should I just remove the lock and put another lathing system on it?

Can you pick the lock? Using a paperclip you may be able to lift the tumblers enough to unlock it. Mold the paperclip to the right size, insert it, move it in and out until you get the tumblers to lift, then turn the paperclip.

Day one of Intel school . . . Lock picking in the morning, handgun shooting in the afternoon, waltzing in the evening. Your tax dollars at work!!

A locksmith might have a "standard" key which works. You could also dismantle the lock to see what kind of key is needed. In some cases you can then even change the lock to work with a key you have.

Locksmith, why not? You can get it open, pick up a couple of keys, and you don't have to hassle around trying to take it apart and put it back together, and if you're like me, it may never be the same after that!

I would try Alan's lock picking suggestion first. A paper clip, a bobby pin, any thin bendable piece of metal with a short right angle inserted and turned may do it. Those are very simple locks.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

A Swiss Army knife with an Awl punch should work too. Just be careful that you don't punch the lock through.
