    Default Last Nights Shave

I decided last night that I would shave off my goatee. I had about 5 days growth and the wife was pretty uptight about it. It was mid-week and I hadn't done anything in particular to deserve it but I decided to treat myself a little.

I put some water on the stove and turned it up on high and waited for it to boil. After it got done boiling I shut of the heat and took the pot upstairs. I wetted my face with water and used soap on my face. I used regular hand soap. This was going to be a special shave but I'm not that wasteful. So I washed off all the oil from my face, then I washed my face again and left the soap to soak.

The water had stopped boiling and had sat for about a minute at this point, so I poured a touch of water into my shaving bowl to get it heated up and tossed my brush into the pot to soak.

I got a razor out to strop.

I lathered up my face, mostly the goatee area, but I thought "Hey, why not shave the rest of my face while I'm here".

I kept lathering. I stuck with it. I think I lathered for about 2 minutes. "Gotta soak that goatee up a bit", I thought to myself.

Then I stropped up. I used a little deflection, then made the strop nice and taut and used a little pressure. I stropped that baby up pretty well although it already was sticky on my finger. Lets pick up the speed, do this right. Build up some draw, test the razor a bit.

Then, with a very light touch, without letting the razor touch my face, I stroked it down the length of the right side of my goatee.

    The goatee evaporated!

    I was stunned.

In a single stroke a 5 day growth was BBS. Baby But Smooth!
I stopped for a sec. What had I done? What hadn't I done?
I proceeded on. The rest of the goatee was pretty easy. I finished the rest of my shave.

Then I realized that I had finally arrived. Like a golfer who hits that perfect stroke, I too, had hit that perfect stroke. Honing, stropping, prep, the stroke direction, pressure, angle; everything had come together in the perfect stroke, with no pulling. There was no sensation that the razor had even touched my face.

It was, as they say, "a moment worth posting about . . . "
