    Default Coffins...not cases?

Why do you call a case for a razor a coffin? Is it because of the sinister thoughts that a straight razor give most people? I would like to know a little history of why coffins are coffins and not cases. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Tim,
Mot of the early cases, say pre-1900 were shaped like the coffins of the day. Small at the bottom, widest 3/4 the way up where they open and small again at the top. This miminced the shape of the early "meat chopper" razors of the time when closed.

Meat chopper of course described the shape of the blade, like a clever, and not what the razor would do to your face although bith are accurate descriptions.

Thank you for the info. Not nearly as "sinister" as I would have thought.
I guess that the coffin shape was popular for any number of things; razor cases, knife handles, etc.

    Thanks,
    Tim

They're also great containers for burying dead rodents.
