Default If your barber shows you how to hone...

Would you offer him some cash for showing you and if so, how much would you offer him? I have been going to this barber for about 4 years or so if that makes any difference.

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Default Honing Lesson

I would offer to compensate my barber for his time and his experience. In fact, I phoned my barber this past weekend asking for such a lesson. I was disappointed in his reply. He informed me that his shop refrains from using straight razors for shaving for sanitary reasons and that he hasn't honed or stropped a razor in years. They use disposable blades (single edge) in lieu of straight razors. Sad.

As far as the offer is concerned, I would pay at least what he/she normally charged for a shave/haircut if he/she offered to show you gratis. I think at least $20 isn't out of the question. I don't know for sure as I'm a newbie. I'm sure some of the honemeisters can give you an idea of the time it would take someone to show you.

i think i would buy a present rather than offer cash. it seems to me to be more personal and shows that you put time and effort into showing your gratitude just as he has done with the lessons.
just giving cash seems a bit cold to me.

That's a very thoughtful idea John. A bottle of wine. A concert ticket. Classy.

It'd be funny if you gave him a stick of deodorant or something.

Think I'll stay away for the deordorant idea. I can only imagine what my next haircut would look like!

I have a question that's an off-shoot of this. I located a barber that is more than happy to show me how to shave with a straight. I'm going to be getting my razor back from Randy next week (I'm guessing) and I'm curious if there is some way I should compensate him. Give him business? Referrals? A gift? Any ideas or suggestions really would be appreciated.

Booze and straight razors shouldn't be in the same room with each other!

I always think a nice cigar would be appreciated.
