Thread: How did i do?

In the spirit of Dick Danger's previous post, how did I do? In a unbridaled bout of bidding, I won two straights on eBay.

I know next to nothing about straights. I ony recently became aquainted with DE's. Did I do OK on these two? The Holler seems like a good buy. The Goldenedge seems OK as well, especially if it cleans up well. At least that is my take on the situation. Can anyone tell me anything about them?

Good snags, you made out like a bandit there. The blades look to be in really good shape. Congrats

You seem to have done well. The Goldedge should be checked for wear on the blade. It may very well be an optical illusion but one pic suggests that there is more wear in the center of the blade. Otherwise they look very good.

Thanks. I feel better about my spontaneous bidding. Is the uneven wear something that can be honed out?

I was thinking that the Holler might make a good shaver if it pans out like the pics suggest. The Goldedge I thought would bring more than I paid after it was cleaned up a bit.

Correcting the edge may be possible but it would take some time.

If you're thinking of restoring the edge you can check my Blog In The Deep End, the first entry (which is archived) to see what I did to restore a similar blade. Be careful of the corners of the hone or you will get some scratches. A coarser hone will work faster, but you will need to be more careful too. I just drew the blade along the edge where it needed to be ground down like a regular honing motion with spine and edge touching over the edge (yes the bend) of the hone for the most part. Tape will help protect the spine from over wearing. Worked pretty good I think. Only lost about 1/16th" of the width over all and produced a very faint "smile".

I paid by personal check, so I just got the Goldedge yesterday. Fortunately, the edge curvature was an optical illusion and everything seems to be fine. It was in even better shape than pictured.
