Some states require they use shavettes, hygiene reasons. Same reason they don't use glass syringes anymore.

Health Dept. banned them in our state years ago.

Buddy (barber) told me that some barbers are lazy and told people they are illegal when it's not.

They use real straights here IIRC:

The local barber that does give shaves tells me that
even the hone and strop had been shown to harbor
    viruses.

With the "Oh My Gosh" factor of AIDS/HIV and
a growing awareness of other blood born viruses
like the liver killing hepatitis viruses I think the
changes make a lot of sense. Even my dentist
    seriously upgraded his sterilization procedures
long before he retired at 70+.

Shaving is a blood sport (even an electric) do not
    share your kit with anyone.

Agreed. I know what I don't have, but I don't know what others might have.

What, do they change the blade after every shave?

They're suppose to. But ya' gotta' ask yourself "Do feel lucky, well do ya'..."

I disagree. If a barber has the right knowledge for sterilizing and sanitizing his equipment, this should not be a worry...
In our everyday life we are exposed to pathogens that are just as bad if not worse then the ones listed but we still trudge on...
    It's irrational IMHO.

I don't recall being exposed to the blood of someone with H.I.V. today or any other day for that matter. Oh yeah that's right... I didn't put myself in a situation where I KNEW there was the possibility that I could get infected.
