Thanked: 0Haning hair test . . .
My honing process includes 4000/8000 Norton, 0.5 paste, strop. When should the razor pass the hanging hair test?
Obviously, if it passes it's good. However, I want to ensure I'm not putting too much effort in the wrong approach.
Thanks,
Bill

I can sometimes get the razor to pass after the .5 paste but stropping usually is the clincher for me. Once stropped the blade is as sharp as its going to get with the blade honed as is. I think there is a point where the pyramid approach isn't needed anymore and you can use the .5 and strop and go down to 8,000 for a few trys. At some point, bout the 3rd try I go back to the 4,000 and try all over again. Then I focus on my technique, using the X pattern and being careful of angles etc. Someone more experienced could get a HHT pass far sooner than I though. For me, its usually after just before or just after stropping.

Thanked: 2209The standard that I use is the 8000 stone, It has to pass the HHT after the 8000 before I go on to a finer stone. My hair is fine but with a lot of body.
Hope this helps,Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Where were you guys two weeks ago. My 12 yr old daughter just donated a 14" pony tail to Locks of Love. Christmas could have been really good!

I don't use as many hairs as I used to. I can feel the edge with my thumb and just use HHT to be sure it'll shave well at least, 'cuz if it don't, I got two or three more that do excellently. I figure, any blade that pops my fine hair is a good shaver and it hasn't failed me as a final test yet. I can only pop the hairs from my head after stropping, though. Off the Norton yes, but always better off the 0.5, smoother pop. My leg hairs(my arms're basically bald) react more, and one of the Mrs' tangled strands even more-so, but she waxes her legs constantly so I don't know how the razor would work on them.
