    Default Traveling and Airport Security

I'm a newbie to the site and to shaving with a straight razor so I apologize if this has been discussed before.

About 2 weeks out of every month I'm traveling on business trips. About 95% of the time I just take a roll-abord bag that I put in the overhead bin on the plane. I'd like to be able to take a straight razor with me, but I'm concerned it won't get past the airport security screeners. I don't want to risk a nice razor being confiscated at the airport. What experiences have you all had?

You should be concerned because it won't go through the scanners without being confiscated. So either consider checking the bag or take a DE.

Yea don't do it it will be confiscated. If you don't have non carry on bags use some disposable or something like that. I wouldn't even take a nice DE like a mercur because they would probably take that too.

As the title of this post implies - I wouldn't even try it. You can pack it in your checked baggage no problem, but I wouldn't pack anything other than a disposable in my carry-on. And even that may be a risk. You never know with airline screeners and what they will consider "dangerous" this week.

So, put it in checked baggage. Or, if you really want to, I suppose you could mail it to yourself overnight before you leave and then it will be at your hotel when you arrive. But that might be a bit silly - the price of postage would soon equal or exceed the price of the razor.

I think that is a no brainer. If you carry it on they will take it. If they don't I would be surprised.

Thanks for all the responses. I pretty much figured I wouldn't be able to take a razor on the plane but I wanted to ask anyway. I guess I'm SOL unless I check my bag.

wrap your razors in paper towels and put them into a (40% more free) extra tall Edge shaving cream can that you have cut the bottom off of and cleaned out. The metal will show up as a solid can on the x-ray, masking the razors, and if you DO have to open your shaving kit, it's unlikely they'll catch it as long as you're smooth. Throw in a Bic disposable as a decoy. If you want to go really 007, apply some lead tape to the interior of the can. This is easily found at golf club retailers or pro shops. Of course, this all depends on how important it is to you to have your razors physically WITH you on the plane. If it were me, I'd just check them in my big bag slipped down into some rolled up socks or something................

Isn't there some sort of small baggage check available with airlines? ( I don't mean normal baggage check) I'd think there would be. for pocket knives or such. It'd make sense if such a service were available.

Also, for those of you using DE's for travel, how long do the blades last?
I've ordered a DE which should arrive next week.

The downside of this being if you /do/ get caught, well, as Ricky used to say, "Lucy - you got some 'splainin' to do!"

Is it really worth the potential for time in a federal prison? Because if you've gone to all the trouble to smuggle them, I doubt the, "Oh, gee, I forgot that was in there..." thing will get you far.

No way, man!!! I had a tiny, I mean tiny pair of foldable scissors confiscated at JFK. I won't take any chances with anything worth more than a disposable in a carry-on bag. I really travel light and would rather not check my bag - the long lines and the possibiltiy of it being misplaced is not worth it. I'll go to the "Mock" III when traveling.
