What's more important to you?
I was going to do a poll however I want detailed answers to this one so here it is.
In case one you go out a get a vintage razor and it's in NOS condition and you got it for a song but nothing to really look at and it gives you the best shave in the world. You can use it every day for say 4 months and then you have to touch it up. Using a typical hone you can get it back to snuff within 10 minutes or less of honing.
In case two you've bought a fancy custom class razor that cost you at least one arm and it also gives you the best shave in the world and it also goes 4 months before needing a touchup but it takes you hours and hours of honing on a series of hones to get it back up to snuff.
What razor would you rather have and why or maybe what's important to you?No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Hands down I'd go for the first scenario. Being able to touch it up in ten minutes is the major selling point. Plus, if it isn't much to look at, I don't have to worry about any dings, scratches, water spots, corrosion, etc. marring the beauty of it. I only have to worry about the edge.
That would be my dream razor.
That being said, if I could afford it, I might still pick up razor number two! (dang rad)

I'd go case one. Ease of honing wins there and the fact that it's vintage plays in too. Not from the point of view that older is necessarily better, but that there are lines running down through the narrative of the object to me that satisfy something in my head that I'm not sure I can explain, even to myself. Having said that, I'd probably pick them both up and be quite happy with the deals.

I would go for the fancy custom. I have plenty of the first kind but the second are fewer and father between. I'll sacrifice a little time and effort ..... and some $.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'd go for #2. Pretty much exactly what Jimmy said. Boring razors bore me.

The razors I use most frequently are the ones which are easy to bring to excellent shaving shape. I still ove my other blades and look forward to being able to spend the time to get them back, but that's just how it goes.

I have had quite a few of both kinds and I reach for the 1st scenario razor more often. There is something about a custom that makes me feel like it needs to be a special occasion to use it. I have gotten rid of most of my custom razors just because I get more use out of the others.

I'd rather have the second one. after 4 months of use I'd sell it and buy the first one and use the rest of my profit to purchase whatever is being advertised on television at the moment

#2, a custom.
So what if it takes more time and effort to bring her back? I have the hones, I have the skill, I have the interest, and I have something unique, or at least that was made in limited numbers.
Alternative reason: I'll just send the razor to Lynn because it is a PITA to hone! If I can afford a fancy custom I can afford to send it to Lynn three times a year.
Is this a personality test?Last edited by Hawkeye5; 02-21-2010 at 04:07 AM.
