    Question Straight Razor Newbie

    Hi there,

I have been reading the forum posts for some time now and have just decided to register.

Im very keen to start using a stright razor as Im one for the closest shave possible. As its completley new to me I dont really know where to start when it comes to buying the razor, honing stone and strop .

Can anyone recommend a good razor for a rookie and where to purchase?

I would be grateful for any help

I would suggest sending a PM to Randydance or TonyMiller. Not only will they sell you a perfect starter razor at a great price but if you ask nicely and PM them from this site they will even hone it for you to shaving sharpness. You'll also need a strop as well.

Tony Miller (heirphoto) gets great reviews on his strops & starter kits. You can also look in the "User Gallery" on the left side links section, then in the Shared For Sale folder... some folks have shave-ready razors for sale there.

Another vote for Tony Miller. He has everything a new shaver needs all wrapped up in one package that's less than what you would spend if you bought all the parts seperate. Call or PM him. He is more than happy to help.

I would agree with the advice to go with Tony Miller if you are interested in getting a quick, fully equipped, low cost start on shaving with a sharp straight razor.

I would suggest getting a 5 - 10 dollar antique store razor, a two dollar belt for a strop and enlisting the honing services of a member.
