Default The TSA and straight razors???

I am assuming a straight razor is a major no no in carry on luggage? I travel every week for work and rarely check luggage, so I was planning on using my safety razor during the week and the straight on the weekends, but I am concerned that this will really slow down my learning curve. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this subject???

We all do...you want a delay, try taking a straight razor in your carry on luggage. You'll be delayed for 2-5 years depending on the quality of your lawyer. If you travel in the U.S. you could get frisky and buy another razor and mail it to your hotel 2 days before you leave, then pick it up when you arrive, then mail it home the day you head back. You could get away with purchasing a Dovo shavette or similar razor and purchasing the blades when you arrive also. I would recommend the Fromm version but they use DE blades. I don't know if you can carry on DE blades but it might be an option, but if you carry on a DE and a shavette I would think you'd be in for a long delay or likely have it all confiscated anyway.

Thus I always have checked baggage...now I actually get upset when they lose my luggage so I put some cheap straights in there to shave when I travel. I also use a paddle strop from Tony to strop with; I cut the handle off (sorry Tony) and it fits perfectly in my Dopp kit.

I'm sure you'll get some other travel ideas, just don't try and hide the razor in something innocuous like a shaving can "safe". Bad idea...you'll come up with that one if you do a search. The only bad advice, besides using a scything motion, I've ever read on this site. "-)

I agree with Alan. Put it in your carry on luggage. Just think of a razor from the TSA perspective: it is an expensive box cutter and you'll get the idea.

I heard of a recent case where a man and his wife were
not allowed to take a nebulizer which their two year old
son needed for asthma. Even though the nebulizer was actually
lagal the security guard would not allow it saying " we have
    emergency oxygen on board ".

That was me, and apparently I should have thrown in a pile of salt with the post, so it would not be so easily overlooked. I was in a smart-ass mood that day. In all honesty, I have one of these "hollow cans". I normally carry my dress watch in it when travelling and the scanner shows simply a can. Never gone beyond a peek in my bag. I also iterated the fact that I would NOT try to smuggle a str8 in it ~ it is simply not worth the risk in my opinion. I truly did not intend anyone to heed that "advice"; if I thought it would be taken seriously I would have kept my mouth shut. Lesson learned. Not speaking of you, Alan, but I need to remind myself, from time to time, how many younger fellows we have here in our midst and what consequences our influence may have. My apologies to the masses.

JL, the guys are right. I posted here once that a tiny pair (1/2 inch blades) of scissors were confiscated from me at JFK. The security guards go on a power trip and they know they have you by the balls. The don't care if you're delayed or what explanation you have. I'll use a gillette the next time I travel, regrettably.

uhm... that would be me? I was explaining the part from the barber text book, and clarifying the, so called cutting stroke (when the point of the razor is going forward) , I think I have used the term scyting motion, which I picked up at the Yahoo group. Again, I blame my limited knowledge of the language, and now, thanx to dictionary.com, things are clearer to me...

So, there you go, there are no bad advices on this site

    JL,

You don't mention the length of your trips, but with just a carry on bag, I'm guessing for only 1-2 days? Even with a DE, you can take the razor, but could hit a snag with the blades. You can always pick up blades at Wal Mart cheap, but there has to be a Wal Mart within a reasonable distance. Most drug stores that sell the same blades usually are 2-3 times more expensive. I would just buy a bag of Bic Sensitive disposables and enjoy the difference that variety can add.
