    Default 5 years between honing

If I'm understanding him correctly, he's saying one only needs to take a straight razor in for honing once in 5 years. Interesting stropping philosophy too.

I for one disagree. You may however get away with 5 years on just Escher touch ups! I haven't been using a straight razor for 5 years though, so this at best is really only an opinion rather than fact.

EDIT: Actually he is wrong! I would never ever take my straight razor in to a knife shop! Never!

If he means 'take in' for honing, or self honing I do not get the question, but my initial response answers the latter.

He is saying you can maintain a razor by plain stropping for 5 years. I have a few razors where that is true however that's the rarity. Most could never shave for 5 years with a razor or anything close to that without doing touchups. (I don't think he said in the video that he uses a straight did he?)

If you have umpteen razors you can probably go 5 years without having to touch up, just use another razor when the first one gives out. A barber hone is too inexpensive and simple to use, every straight user should have one, After a number of stories I have read and some of the evidence I have seen here at SRP I would have to suggest that you NEVER TAKE A RAZOR TO A KNIFE GRINDER!

+1. I just touched up one of my DD's last week on my coticule, the first time in 7-8 months, during which I only stropped and used the very occasional few laps on chrome ox. Granted it is one in a rotation (I currently have fewer than 10) and has not seen daily use.

I find this quite interesting as he shows technique 2 in your video that you told us was "wrong"... Additionally, there's quite a bit of wrist movement here.

I like this video a lot. His technique is quite different than the one in the OP. Do you recommend the technique demonstrated by Liam (strop deflection and all)?
